Cholestyramine takes time and yes, Tex is right. You have to experiment with the dose. I take it 3-3 1/2 hours after dinner. I take vitamins in the AM and afternoon and then a couple with dinner so the choestyramine won't interfere.

After my own experimentation with Sandoz cholestyramine packets (not lite) and Colestipol pills, I have found that just 1/2 packet at night, about an hour before going to bed, works best for me. The Colestipol pills were too much for me and gave me stomach discomfort.

I have puzzled over this too. Research taught me that food takes 6-8 hours to go through the stomach and small intestines. Then, an an average of 40 hours, give or take, for the food to go through the colon and on to be defecated.

Yes, cholestyramine is a bile binding medication, a bile acid sequestrant. My GI doc wrote the script but your primary doctor can certainly do the same, if willing. If you can talk to one of your docs and have them write the script, it might be worth a shot before going to the Mayo Clinic.
