Dr. Fine is hosting a "Gluten Truth" seminar

Post by mbeezie »

Hi Everyone,

Dr. Fine is hosting a seminar in Dallas in November. He is devoting lots of time to the topic of MC, so some of you may be interested in attending. The 4 day event has his other passions interwoven . . . his musical interests, his spirituality and his blueberry products. I am excited to see him do this - I am planning on attending.

Hmmmmmmm. I may have to try to make the Friday sessions. He appears to have some interesting speakers lined up.

Thanks for the link.

I'm only 3 hours away. I may try to go to at least part of it. Nov. 5th is my wedding anniversary. Not so sure hubby will like spending our anniversary at a seminar. LOL

Mary Beth,

  Yep - I'll probably be finished with the part of the program that I'm interested in by about 3:45 on Friday afternoon.

Same here, on meeting. That's an interesting lineup of speakers, so maybe someone else here will be interested, also. I just hope that we don't have to brush up on our Dutch, beforehand. Maybe Harma is familiar with some of those speakers.

Denise,

I agree that he didn't plan the timing very carefully. The 5th is also the opening day of deer season in Texas, which is practically a national holiday. We'll be lucky if we don't get run over on the highway, on the way there, by all the deer hunters heading west to set up camp, ahead of opening day.

I am so sidetracked by the idea of 'blueberry products' that I can't even read anything else. But I plan to... and November is a good get-away month for a northern gardener (we are *all* about the blueberries!).

Tex, no Saturday a.m yoga? I'll self-pay for your yoga and my own ;) We could cut out at 3:45 on Friday for a GF snack...

It's great he's doing this - and I can't wait to find more about blueberries ('cuz mine are ripening even now!).

Well I don't know him personally but I have heard of prof. Mulder, he is the head of the advisory board of the Dutch Celiac Foundation and has a column in het magazine of the Dutch celiac foundation. And that's how I know him. Because, I think it was in the end of 2009, he wrote than article (or his column) about his trip to Australia and so many people eating gluten free there. He named (my interpretation of it) pseudo celiacs of pseudo gluten free eater (in other words it is all between their ears, but again my interpretations of it). I was just gluten (and soy and milk and egg and yeast) free eating (and just became a member of the Dutch celiac foundation), so wasn't exactly pleased with his opinion (I thought yes sure, I am putting myself thru all this trouble with food for fun, I have nothing else to do, and it is all between my ears, yes I was really touched by it)

So I sent him an email telling what I thought about it, and explaining my situation a bit. I got an answer back, no he said he was not referring to people with MC and also mentioned I should be tested for celiac and do the genetic screening (for celiac I guess). That was all done and set than, but (and now it comes)

I than sent him a second mail (where of course important busy professor I never got an answer on) about what else I did/was doing to cure my MC and told him about Dr Kenneth Fine and enterolab and adding the web pages to it. That was fall 2009

And two years later, he is speaking on a conference of Dr Fine and taking one of his colleagues with him. Of course this could be just a coincidence or maybe had heard of Dr Fine, his stool gluten test and enterolab before or maybe Kenneth Fine contacted him. But to be honest I wouldn't be surprised that after my email he checked out the web paged I sent him or googled Dr Fine and plunged himself in and got in touch with him.

Who knows.

I don't want to give myself too many credits, but if my email had led to this, that really would be great. Because that would mean finally Dr Fine gets the credits he deserves of main stream medicine. I know Prof. Mulder is a highly respected GI doc when it comes to celiac in the Netherlands and I am sure also outside the Netherlands.

And what also gives me hope, when I read where those two Dutch scientist are going to talk about not only Celiac but also celiac and de non celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac and MC. And that Dr Bouma is going to speak about new treatment options about MC.

For a while I am looking for a specialist in MC in NL (well not really looking just wishing there was one), at the moment especially in the flare where I am not very content with my current GI. I would like to get another one with more knowledge of MC (but he is that not what we all want :-))

But maybe this Dr Bouma is. I think I'll try and find email addresses of both and sent them an email and tell how delighted I am that they are going to speak on the Dr Kenneth Fine conference and what my experiences are with him (well enterolab) the diet and especially how I have find all that information. .

Interesting Harma - maybe you were the one that changed his mind. I wouldn't hold it against him. We were all naysayers at one point, even Dr. Fine. What's important is that people are changing their minds.

Sara,

The blueberry products are blueberry juice (Dr. Blueberry) and blueberry fiber. He also has another juice called Dr. Muscaberry from muscadine grapes (spelling?). They are all high in antioxidants. I have seen Dr. Blueberry at Whole Foods. I'm interested in learning more about the fiber. I spoke with a dietitian last week who told me that she spoke with Dr. Fine's brothr in Dallas, who is also a gastrenterologist. He is using the fiber with some of his patients and says it's a really good product. I don't think he is saying that because he is his brother. From what I understand they have had their share of differing opinions.

Today I am going blueberry picking. It's surprsising that anything is growing in this awful drought, but supposedly it is the prime weekend for picking here in Houston. I see some dairy free blueberry ice cream in my near future.

Sara, hope you can make it to Dallas. We could have a PP party at 3:45 before Tex scoots out.

Mary Beth,

I'm looking forward to that ice not-cream recipe! Glad you have blueberries despite the drought - mine here won't be ripe for a few more weeks.

I'll keep an eye out for those products (and maybe I'll add a muscadine grape vine to my garden...)

It would be great to have a meet-up in Dallas - I've noted the date and will see whether I can make it happen.

We're harvesting our serviceberries today, and will freeze them all... I'm thinking sorbet. I'm also dreaming of a gazpacho sorbet when tomato season comes. My sense now is that I can eat small amounts of tomato, and that strikes me as a perfect way to find out, some hot afternoon in July...

Love,
Sara

Since I've never done anything of that sort in my life, I would probably end up in the ER if I were to be foolish enough to attempt anything like that, first thing in the morning. I appreciate the kind offer, though. As Red Buttons used to say, "I didn't come here to be made sport of".

Harma,

That's an interesting story. It's certainly possible that you might have pointed Dr. Mulder in a new direction. Good for you.

I too received the very looong email from Dr Fine. I copied it below for those of you not on his mailing list.

He seems like such an interesting person. My favorite part of the email is how he describes himself: "In addition to my left-brained passion for scientific-medical information, education, and discovery, I have an additional right-brained passion for musical and lyrical expression. I deem myself a “Dually Hemispheric Physician-Musician on a Mission”.

Dear Friends,

Health organizations that embrace the Goodness of service, the Intelligence of scientific know how, the Excitement of new discovery, and the Truth in what they say and do maintain a lasting place in this world. I am therefore privileged to announce that on April 1st, 2011 EnteroLab and my non-profit Intestinal Health Institute celebrated our 11th Anniversaries from our start-up date. It was in April 2000 that my formal academic medical career officially took on a full-time Public Health Service mission that continues to exist and work today “For Your Health, Happiness, and Hope.” EnteroLab.com, the world’s first online intestinal health clinical laboratory, was the offspring of my previous 11 years of academic research at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas (1989-2000). During the 1990’s, my formal research studies of intestinal physiology, celiac disease, and microscopic colitis gave way to a new understanding of Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity and how it adversely affects the health of many millions of both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Since starting EnteroLab.com in 2000, our understanding and experience of this field has continued to expand, as we more fully appreciate what now appears to be a raging epidemic of gluten sensitivity.

Because I refrain from contacting my clients and friends unnecessarily or often, this communication has a lot of information on many important topics. So I thank you in advance for reading on about how we have turned the humble excitement of our 11th anniversary into many new services, products, educational events, and opportunities for you that will not only benefit your health and happiness, but will also educate, entertain, and enlighten you with what I call “The Higher Truth of Health”. Thank you also for making this 11th anniversary celebration possible, because without the support and patronage of health-conscious individuals such as yourself, we would not be doing so.

Weekend Conference November 3-6, 2011 in Dallas: “The Gluten Truth meets The Circle of Life” at www.IntestinalHealth.org/2011DallasEvent

It seems highly appropriate that we acknowledge and celebrate our commitment to public service in our 11th year since the number 11 is known as a “master number” of service. I am therefore pleased to announce and invite you to a live anniversary celebratory gathering at what will be our third weekend conference (previous conferences were held in 2006 and 2008). This conference is called “The Gluten Truth meets The Circle of Life: A Tale of Two Hemispheres” (see http://www.intestinalhealth.org/2011dal ... ochure.pdf for brochure with full conference line-up and registration instructions). The price to attend this 4-day conference is an astounding $245 which covers all lectures, events and conference meals. If you prefer, attendance of any individual day, or the Saturday Night Gala Banquet-Musical Concert only is also available for similarly low prices.

The conference will feature a keynote address by my former mentor and world famous gastrointestinal researcher Dr. John Fordtran, whose original discovery of microscopic colitis, and whose assignment to me in 1989 to follow a path of research on that disease, eventually led to my discovery in 1999 of non-celiac gluten sensitivity as an important cause of multifaceted illness, as well as how to diagnose it using stool testing. Dr. Fordtran and I, in back-to-back lectures, will re-trace this interesting chronological path – beginning with a historical account by Dr. Fordtran of the events leading up to and following his original discovery and description of microscopic colitis in 1979, and ending with the account of how my research discovered how celiac disease and microscopic colitis were inter-related, which, in turn, unlocked the mechanism of how gluten induces illness in so many non-celiac patients/people.

The conference will also feature an unprecedented historic account of how, in 1950, Willem Karel Dicke, MD, PhD, a Dutch Pediatrician, published his findings on how gluten was the cause of celiac disease; this account at our conference will be given by none other than his son of the same name, a distinguished physician in the Dallas metroplex. We are also pleased to have Alice Bast, the founder and Director of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness present her experience on how her celiac disease turned into a life of award-winning public service, a presentation that will serve to ignite your own passion and purpose… not only for your own health, but for the health of society at large. And finally, an incredible person and practitioner, Dr. Gary Berman will enlighten you with a unique account of how you can learn to tap into your own intuition and higher self to pave the way for a more successful, healthful life. I will also be giving lectures relating to the namesake of the conference: “The Gluten Truth” and “The Circle of Life”, and our Nurse-Clinical Manager, Phyllis Zermeno, BSN, and the head of our Research and Development Laboratory, Dr. Frederick Ogunji (both officers in our nonprofit organization) will be relating their unique experiences in their important roles in the organizations.

In addition to this fantastic educational line-up, and a completely gluten-free healthful menu (with additional catering to other food sensitivity and Kosher-food needs), the conference will also feature some creative entertainment opportunities for both you and I. There will be a talent show and Karaoke night on Friday November 4th, when you will have the opportunity to have the Mic and Stage for a few precious minutes to show case your talent, followed on Saturday night by a banquet dinner, CD-Release Party, and Live Concert featuring me and my All-Star Rock n' Blues band. My new CD release, “Memphis Rising”, representing my 7th CD release since 2002, was recorded in Memphis, TN (the birthplace of Rock and Roll and home of the Blues) with an all-Memphis musician studio line-up. My musical pursuits will not only provide entertainment for the conference, but more generally, help me to be the creative, service-oriented, spiritual, and well rounded health professional I have come to be… and happier, and healthier as well. Being happier and healthier personally stimulates me to lead you to a life of the same, because the best part of Goodness is to share it and give it away! You will hear this and more in my songs at the concert, and at presentations at the conference. Please go to www.IntestinalHealth.org/2011DallasEvent for the full story. Thank you, and I hope to see you in Dallas in November!

New EnteroLab Tests Offered at https://www.EnteroLab.com

At the time I began prescribing gluten-free diets for non-celiac colitis patients with gluten sensitivity in 1998, I went gluten-free myself, to help myself empathize with my prescribed dietary treatment for others. Since then, my own personal diet-induced health recovery (from lumbosacral arthritis), combined with my 20 years of medical research and experience as a lab director, has led me to the understanding that there are many foods additional to gluten that cause immunologic sensitivity-induced illness. Research since the 1960’s has shown the same to be true, which is why since 2000, www.EnteroLab.com has offered tests for immunologic sensitivities to milk, eggs , and yeast, adding soy a few years later. Over the past 10 years, we have been researching how to best expand this line of stool testing to more antigenic foods, in a way that yielded results that would be clinically meaningful, while being affordable for you (because dealing with stool is a time consuming, laborious process). Although many labs offer similar tests of blood and saliva for food sensitivity, research for 20 years (including but not exclusively our own) has shown testing of intra-intestinal contents to be far more sensitive and accurate compared with blood or saliva (O'Mahony S,et al. Dissociation between systemic and mucosal humoral immune responses in coeliac disease. Gut. 1991;32(1):29-35.) .

Thus, a goal of establishing a broader repertoire of food antigen testing in stool seemed worthy indeed. Over the past 3-4 years we at EnteroLab have invested in new analytical machines, technology, employees, and research to help make this a reality. The launch of this expanded food antigen panel and other new tests for parasites and pancreatic function ( with pancreatic elastase) come at a perfect time during our anniversary celebration year. We are also offering discounts on these new food sensitivity panels at Enterolab.com, as part of this anniversary celebration, my way of showing our appreciation to you for your past patronage and support.

The Organic Alternative: Organic SuperFood Solutions at www.TheOrganicAlternative.com

We all have heard that “You are what you eat”. This is absolutely true. I have found in my own road to health recovery from debilitating lumbosacral arthritis that Organic SuperFoods lead to super organic health benefits. The same cannot be said unfortunately for gluten-free replacement grain products, which simply add nutrient-poor, obesigenic carbohydrate/starch calories to the diet. Since 1999, as part of my health mission, I have been bringing organic produce and other non-perishable organic foods (mainly nuts, dried fruits, green teas, and a few intestinal supplements like probiotics and digestive enzymes) at below-retail cost to my neighbors in local food co-ops, with the purpose of delivering “Better Food at Lower Prices”. During this time, I met a man who grows the most delicious organic blueberries on earth. I have worked with this man to develop a line of non-perishable organic blueberry products, that feature only the antioxidant and nutrient benefits of blueberries (Dr. Blueberry brand), or a combination of blueberries with the added antioxidant and anti-aging benefits of muscadine grapes (Dr. Muscaberry brand), the only grape native to North America, and a fruit high in the recently discovered anti-aging substance resveratrol. Furthermore, it has been shown in a research study out of Sweden (Håkansson A, et al. Blueberry husks, rye bran and multi-strain probiotics affect the severity of colitis induced by dextran sulphate sodium. Scand J Gastroenterol. 2009;44(10):1213-25.), and in my own unpublished research, that one of these products, a Blueberry Intestinal Fiber Supplement (like a “Metamucil” made out of blueberries) can treat or prevent colitis.

It has been my desire since the early 2000’s to extend the benefits of my local co-op, which delivers gluten-free Organic SuperFoods, to the public at large via a website called www.TheOrganicAlternative.com . This desire has also become a reality in this 11th anniversary year (there must be something to this Master number thing!). As you will see in the information on the TOA website, the benefits are again multi-faceted and represent a true alternative to the high cost of retail organic food, and an alternative to the obesigenic gluten-free grain products (bread, cookies, pancakes, brownies, etc.) so often turned to by those going gluten-free for the first time. Why not replace gluten and other antigenic foods with real health food, rather than staying in the same obesigenic American dietary paradigm? This is the true purpose of this website, to provide such foods at a more reasonable cost than general retail, as well as offer nutritional consultation from nutritional professionals for those seeking it. Consider The Organic Alternative “Real Health Food from Real Health Professionals!”

I am also working on a plan to allow you as my clients and/or friends to sell some of our unique Blueberry-related products to your friends in a way that maintains my mission of “Better Food, Lower Prices” but that also offers you an opportunity for a small income by doing so. It is not a multi-level marketing scheme, as those inherently cause prices to sky-rocket. It is simply a “buy a great product for a low price and share it with another at a low-reasonable price”. I am doing this to share in the goodness of both the products and the work to bring them to more people. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact me personally by going to https://shop.theorganicalternative.com and “Contact Us”.

Be the Circle: A New Inspirational Program “For Goodness’ Sake” at http://BeTheCircle.org

In addition to my left-brained passion for scientific-medical information, education, and discovery, I have an additional right-brained passion for musical and lyrical expression. I deem myself a “Dually Hemispheric Physician-Musician on a Mission”. While some of my songs and music are purely for entertainment (like any music), much of my music has assumed an inspirational theme as well, with inspirational titles like “For Want of Higher Ground” and “The Circle of Life (There’s No Time to Waste).” Some of my music has even been outright health educational, mainly my musical health program for children called “Get on a Mission of Nutrition”. Furthermore, I have decided to use my music to “Create and Inspire Goodness… For Goodness’ Sake” with a program called “Be the Circle”. You can read about this program, and download a free copy of “The Circle of Life” song at http://BeTheCircle.org . You will also experience the Goodness of this program live at the finale of our fall weekend conference, should you decide to attend (and I surely hope you do because I really desire to meet the faces behind all the names I encounter at EnteroLab!). To learn more about and hear samples of my music please go to http://www.kennydavinfine.com . To purchase music CD's and/or educational DVD's from our past conferences or for children’s health please go to https://shop.kennydavinfine.com .

(Special Note: If this type of inspirational program and approach to public health and goodness particularly appeals to you, and you would like to be part of our special mailing list for these types of services and events (separate from those relating to the purely intestinal health communications), please contact me and let me know so at https://shop.kennydavinfine.com/contact ... cstrfrnt02 (if this link is not active, please copy and paste it into your web browser).

SixSOS: A New Online Directory to my Six Sides of Service at www.SixSOS.org

SixSOS.org is a new webpage that now serves as an online directory to each of my other websites as part of my “Six Sides of Service” (hence, SixSOS). These six sides are: Science/Medical Innovation, Public Health Education, Organic SuperFood Solutions, Healing Voice Music, a Children’s Health Curriculum, and a new and upcoming Spiritual Health Initiative (the latter will also be represented by a Spiritual Nutrition lecture at our fall conference on the final morning, Sunday). This should make it easier when trying to navigate between our various service arms. I hope you like it, and I hope it helps.

New Income and Service Opportunities for You

As we at EnteroLab, the Intestinal Health Institute, and now The Organic Alternative continue to find new and expanding ways to serve society with our unique brand of health service, we are challenged to find stellar individuals who can help us serve society with the high-minded, spiritually-oriented mentality that typifies myself and all of my excellent co-workers. Instead of relying only on job advertisements, I would like to, on a regular basis, invite you to offer your experience and expertise as a health-conscious individual, or maybe even as a health or nutritional practitioner, to join us in our service, either as a paid employee, a partner, and/or as a volunteer. Over time, we are always looking for such individuals to fill various positions in our organization. If you possess a degree in the health field, nutrition, medical/laboratory technology, or sciences; have a passion for Organic SuperFood; possess a unique creative talent in communications, marketing, public relations, and event-planning or event booking; have a passion to help people and make this a better world; and/or embrace a spiritual orientation in your life, we may have such opportunities for you. If so, please contact me personally by going to https://shop.theorganicalternative.com and “Contact Us”.

Finally, if you or someone you know are/is qualified to direct a clinical laboratory overseas, we are looking for international partners to help expand our testing services internationally.

Thank You!

Please let me take this opportunity to thank you kindly for your help and support during these 11 wonderful years of serving you. If nothing else, I hope you will come celebrate with us in Dallas at our Fall Conference so my staff and I have the opportunity of meeting you in person, as well as Educating, Entertaining, and Enlightening you… and your friend(s), spouse, loved one(s), or children.

Gratefully Yours in Heartfelt Service,

Kenneth Fine, M.D.
