Imodium and gas pains

Post by jmayk8 »

So I have been following my new diet per my new sensitivities and my D has been off the charts. I just don't get it! I have been using pepto and it's not helping. I'm considering taking Imodium but I remember when I used to take it, the day after I would have HORRIBLE gas/stomach pains. Does anyone get these too? Do you take something else with them?
Thanks

Jenny,

I'm sorry to hear that your symptoms are so bad, despite your diet changes. That's a heck of a note.

I never noticed any gas or pain from Imodium, but even half a pill made me slightly dizzy, and a whole pill caused major vertigo problems. Most people don't seem to have any problems with the product, though.

Jenny,

I am suffering the same as well. I have only taken Immodium 2 times but have recently had sever bloating. To the point that I look pregnant, and pain associated with it. Gurgles and stomach sounds very loud as well. I have a call into my Dr about it as it is becoming unbearable. I will let you know what the Doc says. Good luck!!!

Delta,

Welcome to the board. Chances are, your gas and bloating symptoms are due to gluten-sensitivity, (unless the only times those symptoms are present are after you take Imodium) - those are classic symptoms of food-sensitivities, and most of us who have this disease, have those symptoms, when we're reacting. The gurgles and loud digestive noises are also characteristic of the inflammatory bowel diseases, (especially MC), and celiac disease.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

For me, too, bloating + gurgles are a clear indicator that I've eaten something. Usually gluten, but dairy is my number 2 suspect, and when I'm really sick, even a little rice (normally fine) can give me that bloat.

I hope you're feeling better,

I have Celiac Disease and have been Gluten Free for 4 years as well as soy free for a year. I too am new to this site and was just recently diagnosed with LC. The pain and bloating is terrible, I was fine besides the D before my diagnosis of LC. Just taking the Pepto 3 -3x /day and occasionaly the Immodium to help if needed. I have been doing the Pepto since June 15th and this bloating just started this weekend. I will try some suggestions on other foods to elminate. Thanks All

deltawolf,

It does sound as though another food intolerance has cropped up for you, I'm sorry to say. I'd put my money on dairy as the likeliest. It's the most common problem food, after gluten.

It seems almost unfair, after your years of diligent GF eating - and all my sympathies about the pain and bloating. I hope never to feel that again, and I hope you don't, either.

Wishing you well,

Sara

Sara,

Thanks, I am sure I will figure it out. Just frustrating as I am sure you are aware. Thank goodness I have a wonderful husband who puts with me and supports me through it all.

I'm abundandtly fortunate with the husband support, too. I truly don't know how I would have gotten through the past few months without the help with dog-walking, grocery shopping, cooking, and much besides. And without this forum, I'm sure I would have been a lot harder to be around - he would have had to listen to *all* of my whining and frustration. It *is* frustrating, without a doubt.

Here's hoping you get this new issue solved fast,

I also have side effects from Immodium--it seems to back up everything in my system and cause some gas/pain. It does allow me to go to work, so sometimes it's worth the extra gas to know I won't have an accident in front of other people.

My mom made us take Pepto when we went on family vacations so we didn't get car sick, but I still got sick, and to this day I can't even look at anything the color of Pepto without getting ill! Yuck!

Maynard,

That "Pepto pink" color is hideous. When I was first sick, I took a few of the chewables and told my husband they weren't so bad. That's how I knew I was sicker than I thought ;) GROSS. I did use the capsules, which at least are a smaller version of hideous pink, and in a smaller ugly pink bottle. I have no idea why they would try to associate that color with feeling better - it has the same negative vibe for me that you're describing. Yuck. (But I have to admit, it helped me get my symptoms under control... hoping for never again, but I have some buried in a drawer where i don't have to see the color.)

I also get gas and crampy pain from Immodium. It just plugs me up and delays the D temporarily. I'm not a fan. I started Pepto tabs again today since I've had a stress-induced flare the last few weeks. Luckily it's just D, no pain or fatigue, and the accidents seem to only happen at home. Phew.

Z,

Been thinking of you, in the midst of your move - hope Pepto is a good a helper for you as it has been for me. I carry it always (though my symptoms almost always grab my attention when I'm home).

Sorry to hear about the stress and symptoms - wishing you that both will soon be behind you.

Thanks Sara,
We accomplished the move and work frantically continues on the house. It's about 95% done now. I've been able to unpack in the kitchen and my closet, but that's about it. Most of our stuff is piled high in the basement and we can't ever find the things we need. We have to remind ourselves that this is better than paying rent. We're in upstate NY (Kingston) with my hubby's extended family this weekend, allowing the painters time to finish and the flooring company a second try at finishing the hardwoods properly. Grrr. I hate incompetence, especially when you are paying for top quality! Juggling contractor schedules, summer camps and sitters for my son, cashflow to pay for remodeling overuns, working, unpacking, etc. is all too much!! Serenity now!

Can't wait for life to calm down. It never does. There's always something unexpected around every corner, and an MC attack to go with it. But I'm OK. Life's an adventure, and I'm fortunate overall.
