DF means avoid Dove Dark Chocolate

Post by Sharaine »

Don’t eat Dove chocolate, not even dark Dove chocolate, if you are DF. That is what I learned the last three days. I thought that Dove dark chocolate had no milk in it so on Tuesday and Wednesday, I popped a piece in my mouth and enjoyed it. I was taking my dog, Emily, for a walk and wanted an energy burst. I’d grab lunch when we returned.

Wednesday around noon I was suddenly VERY tired. I took a catnap because I still had work to do (I work from home, doing marketing for a great company). Tuesday night I was so tired I went to bed early.

Thursday dawned and I was still tired, but I had plenty of work that needed to be done and I’ve missed a lot of work as a result of having 5 weeks of XD prior to my diagnosis in early June. Come lunchtime, I laid down to take a nap again, just like on Tuesday, because I was SO exhausted. I planned to rest a half hour. One hour later, I awoke and could easily have slept longer, but work beckoned.

During this time I noticed that while Norman hasn’t visited me in several months, what little pieces I was passing were becoming mushy and almost like D. I kept analyzing what I’d eaten; I’ve been so careful, how could this be happening???

Then last night I went to see an old friend who was in town for a conference. Not only was she there, but several other college classmates were, too. All of us had not seen each other in 20+ years. Intending to stay only 2 hours, I spent 4.5 hours there! Just as I was getting ready to depart, the subject of food allergies came up and it turned out one classmate cannot eat gluten and many other foods. She happened to mention that Dove dark chocolate has milk in it. I said, “What did you say??? Please say that again.” So she repeated herself and my jaw subsequently dropped and little tears started welling up in my eyes. Oh my gosh, I had caused my own exhaustion by consuming Dove dark chocolate pieces.

The classmate with food allergies immediately took out paper and pen and starting writing down what to look for like European chocolate, ginger chews, and so forth, all from Trader Joe’s. Unfortunately, we don’t have Trader Joe’s here, but we do have Whole Foods and Sunflower Markets. So, I’ll check those places for some of the things she suggested.

Today I’m still not recovered by my dairy intake, although I’m better than yesterday. I think last night’s conversation and realization that I’d inadvertently taken in dairy drove home the point that this disease is not going to be a cinch to deal with. On one level I knew that already, but on another … well, you know the feeling. I sure wish I could beat the “low vibration/shaking” that my entire body is doing and has been for three days. It wouldn’t stop even last night so I took a Benadryl to help fall asleep.

Tomorrow is my trip to DC and Pennyslvania to see my MIL who has three kinds of cancer. She wanted to make one last trip to PA to her hometown, so we’re going. I have a bit of food packed to take, and hope there are lots of salad bars up there in PA. Wish me luck.

Yes, chocolate sure can be a mine field. Label reading is so important. I was hoping dark chocolate M&Ms might be dairy free, but they add lactose!!

Sharaine,

Those are the hardest food sensitivities to figure out - the ones that we know are safe, (when they're really not).

Hopefully, you may have found this out in time that your trip will be much easier, and more enjoyable.

Good luck with your trip - I hope it goes smoothly.

Enjoy Life chocolate chips are GF, DF, SF. They have had mini chips (micro mini to me) but I went to their page and they have chunks.

So sorry, Sharaine. Although it's fairly easy to find chocolate without milk, it's very difficult to find it without soy lethicin. I have purchased bars of it a Passover, when there isn't any lethicin added.

Joan,

Are you able to eat chocolate again?

Thank you, Joan and Gloria,

I will look into the European chocolate and the Enjoy Life chocolates. I'm not a big chocolate eater. I just grabbed what was close for an energy boost on those two days. From now on I'll go for something like fruit! I am also going to check into the ginger chews my friend recommended.

Gloria, as far as I know, chocolate isn't forbidden for me. I may learn otherwise as time goes on. Remember, I'm still on 9mg Entocort a day. Goodness only knows what will happen when the doctor (or I) tapers my dosage.

Hugs to you all!

Sharaine, I am so sorry, and I wish you safe eating on this very important trip. It is such a shock to be betrayed by a food you are confident is safe. And also such a shock that it takes as long as it does to "bounce back" (more like a slow crawl). And considering we've eaten gluten and dairy for years, it's amazing how just a small amount can put us on the sidelines when MC really makes its presence known in our lives.

It's great that you have a friend and classmate who really gets it, and can share resources. Whole Foods can be a real resource - and you will get very clever at tweaking and reinvinting recipes. This morning I made a 'cheese' with soaked cashews, coconut, cucumber and chives/parsley to go replace the herbed goat cheese I used to love. It was pretty good, but it will be better next time. (A colleague said "you're like some kind of weird vegan who eats meat." Yup - and chocolate.)

There are also cocoa powders available with few/no added ingredients. (And we occasionally buy a chocolate bar with only chocolate, olive oil, sugar, salt and almonds... for $8!!! - we enjoy it very slowly.)

Though we're all different, my traveling foods include potato chips, almond butter, turkey burger leftovers... etc. Ginger has worked for me, in teas and candies. You're right that tapering your dosage will change things, but you're doing a great job of figuring things out already. After your trip, you can focus on preparing for the Big Taper, by narrowing down whatever culprits you can... For now, maybe you'll find an expensive styrofoam cooler for the longest days. Please know that we're all pulling for you, and travel safe.

All my best, Sara

Dark chocolate of Lindt is soy and diary free, but do check the label sometimes it does contain soy lechtine. Also Swiss is soy free, but what they do to "enhance" the quality of their chocolate, add milk fat sigh

another perfect option is bonvita, you can eat all kind of chocolate from this brand, it's soy and diary free, and based on rice milk

http://www.bonvita.com/

in the Netherlands I could buy in any shop and I know Gabes orders its online.

Thank you, Harma and Joan. I will check into your suggestions. My friend was just in Paris and said she brought me back Dutch and Swiss chocolate. She checked them for dairy. I haven't seen her yet to pick up the candy. Will let you know what I learn.

one more suggestion for you--Chocolove, but only the organic variety is DF and SF. I have tried the Lindt, it's available reasonably at Wal-Mart superstores, and is pretty good, but if you can find the Chocolove organic on sale, which happens, it is even better. Good Luck!, Beverly

Sharaine,

We have been able to find some lovely chocolate choices without dairy - how sweet of your friend! When I am iffy, I avoid the ones that have soy lecithin (boo, that's many of them) - or I have a very small amount at any one time, which also makes them last longer. I have not had any terrible days after a chocolate treat, so far... I think the options will get better and better (and be easier to find... I am in NYC, so there are a lot of foodie shoppers and it's not common, but possible to find things that aren't available via national distributors... yet).

Beverly, thanks for the Chocolove info! - my husband just bought a bar of theirs this evening, but it wasn't the organic/SF variety. We will hound our local merchants to carry that! (Or rather, I will.) The kind he bought is really tasty but I'm in "no soy" mode this evening, so I'm satisfying myself with looking at the chocolate, and him, 'meaningfully.' I am sure their organic/SF variety will be fabulous.

I'm watching my dog munch on a dead branch, and thinking how easy eating is for some creatures ;)
