New member just saying thanks for being here

I wanted to say hello and thank you guys so much for being here.

I’ve had MC since March of this year and I’m just now getting some relief thanks to you guys.

I have been gluten and dairy free since the summer of 2010 when I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid. I realize now that I wasn’t as diligent about it as I needed to be.

I lost 60 lbs. in 2010 on a low carb diet and then quit smoking Jan 15, 2011. The evil D started in March. I have read cases of others who quit smoking and then developed MC. I have also just been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, so my immune system is definitely in a bad mood.

The Dr. who diagnosed me with the MC was rather rude and abrupt the few times that we met. He did an eye roll when I told him that I am gluten and dairy free and why. He told me flat out that he does not buy into any of the “Leaky Gut” stuff. After the diagnosis he was pretty straight and to the point. Pepto, Steroids and then surgery. Eat whatever you want because it will make no difference with this and most people end up with the surgery.

I did the Pepto for 3 weeks and no relief. I went to see the alternative medicine Dr. who handles my thyroid. He had me on 42 pills a day for a month and no relief.

I finally had the GI doc phone in a prescription for Entocort. I am just finishing up my first month on the Entocort and I’m feeling much more hopeful.

I was feeling pretty alone and hopeless until I stumbled upon this site in May 2011. I didn't start feeling better until I got relentless about what I was eating everyday. Yep, it was the eggs. Thank you guys so much for all you do.

:welcome:

I'm glad you found help here and glad you posted.

This is for your doctor who gave you the dx. I can't wait until you prove him wrong.

Hi Erin,

Welcome! I'm very sorry that you happened to encounter such an ignorant and rude GI specialist. Unfortunately, that happens way too often with this disease. Out of frustration, many GI docs blame the patient, in an attempt to hide their own incompetence. Instead of having an open mind, so that they can learn from their patients, many of them seem to have a chip on their shoulder, because they can't figure out how to successfully treat the disease. Shame on them.

It's great to hear that you're doing so much better now, and I hope that your progress continues.

Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for posting such an inspiring update. Please don't hesitate to post, if you should encounter any other setbacks. Sometimes hidden ingredient problems can be very tough to track down, (as you know), and someone here may have run into the same issue at one time or another.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Welcome, Erin (and well said, Tex!!!).

Congratulations on quitting smoking, by the way. Good for you. I love what you said about your immune system being in a bad mood - I can totally relate. Hashimoto's is not uncommon among MC (and celiac) folks.

Hard to see how surgery would help... not to mention what fun it is to have surgery. Good for you *again* for the smarts in ignoring that exceptionally poor advice. I love the idea of you proving your doctor wrong. Even if you never speak to that particular doc again.

You are not alone; "Gluten Free Girl" asked her GI to test her for celiac, but he refused because it's "rare." (She had read about it on the Internet - you know how doctors looove an informed patient who learned something on the 'Net.) She thought she was dying... and she was right about the celiac disease, luckily wrong about the dying.

I hope some of your low-carb recipes from 2010 are coming in handy (and congratulations on losing those pounds). I am truly, deeply, and passionately sorry about the eggs. I thought I had "won" by quitting gluten/dairy/soy, so I really was blind-sided when I learned I had antibodies to eggs (via Enterolab testing). I have finally figured out how to eat breakfast again, but the mourning in some ways was worse than the Big Ones.

I love that you describe yourself as relentless about what you're eating. You will surely get your life back, with that attitude in your toolkit. Relentless diet plus Entocort adds up to a recipe that has worked for many folks here. I also found the Enterolab tests helpful. With your capacity for relentless diet vigilance, you have a proven ability to decode your food tolerances so far; but if you ever hit a 'wall' in your progress, keep that in mind, or MRT testing (which I am considering myself).

It's great to hear such a positive update. I know there are always ups and downs, but I hope you're feeling empowered, successful, and ready for the next step in healing.
