More On The Cholesterol Hoax beat_deadhorse:

Post by tex »

Hi All,

I realize that I have just about ridden this horse to death, but just in case there is anyone who here who needs more convincing that cholesterol has nothing to do with heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and/or overall death risk, please consider this article, (the red emphasis is mine, of course):
Dr MK ran some analysis on World Health Organisation (WHO) data. The WHO has extensive data from almost 200 countries on more health measures than you could imagine – definitely worth a look one rainy, wintry afternoon. This is where Dr MK presented the world with two different Seven Country Studies – (for those of you who aren’t familiar with the history, it was the Ancel Keys’ Seven Countries Study that started all the fat heart hypothesis stuff). Dr MK took the seven countries with the lowest saturated fat intake and then the seven countries with the highest saturated fat intake. You may need to read this twice – but he found: “Every single one of the seven countries with the lowest saturated fat consumption has significantly higher rates of heart disease than every single one of the countries with the highest saturated fat consumption.”
But that's just a preliminary observation. If you don't read the entire article, at least scroll down the page, and study the charts where the author took data from the WHO site, and plotted deaths due to cardiovascular disease versus cholesterol, for both males and females, (individually), and the charts where she plotted all deaths versus cholesterol, again for both males and females, (individually). Clearly, in all cases, the greatest number of deaths corresponded with the lowest cholesterol levels, and the lowest death risk occurred with the highest cholesterol levels. Nothing could be clearer, since these are actual death rates, not just some predicted data.

I have no doubt that the medical industry will continue to promote the Great Cholesterol Hoax for many years to come, but this old country boy ain't fallin' for that pitch no more.

Statin drugs = diabetes!!

Post by Zizzle »

You'll love this news too!

A recent meta-analysis has demonstrated that taking statin drugs is associated with excess risk of developing diabetes.

Researchers looked at five different clinical trials that together examined more than 32,000 people. They found that the higher the dosage of statin drugs being taken, the greater the diabetes risk.

I send my parents and in-laws at least weekly reminders about the dangers of statins, but they soldier on, like sheep, following doctor's orders. Their cholesterol levels aren't eventhat high - low 200's. Se we get to hear about muscle pains and strains, etc. :mallet:

Gee, and I thought that statins were supposed to be preventative medicine. :headscratch:

Thanks for the info. The news just gets better and better, doesn't it.

Tex - that is awesome - even better than all the previous. Dang it all, I just promised a friend I'd stop sending him statin alerts, and challenged him to re-persuade *himself* that the risk of his marginally elevated cholesterol is greater than the risk of statins! I hate to go back on my word... but maybe he needs the link to the WHO data, which just happens to be embedded in this article?

Z, your parents and in-laws are among a lot of pretty smart people who mysteriously believe their doctors are smarter and more knowledgeable than they are, despite evidence to the contrary. Maybe eventually you'll be able to hand them the right question to ask the doctor, to make that clearer... meantime I think it's great you keep trying to show them where they might want to be thinking...

Love,
Sara
