One year on from diagnosis....

Post by natythingycolbery »

... Firstly I find this amusing that on the year to the date of me being diagnosed with LC is also the date that i get my 500 post on PP! (I get entertained way to easily!!!!)

Secondly, today is Aug 9th, which means at about 9am (BST) I was informed by my GI that I did indeed have MC as he suspected...

So what has changed in the past year or so since diagnosis??

Well, tbh, not as much as I had intentionally hoped...

I am off medication completley (appart from multi-vits) and have been off meds for MC since October 2010. And my GI discharged me.

I have managed to gain some of the weight that I lost in the 8 weeks between first symptoms and diagnosis, I went from 54kg to 48kg and am now at 51kg and seem to be stuck there.

I think I just about accept that this is part of my life,

There is however one aspect of this disease that I still seem to be refusing to accept, although it has been something that has been starting to cross my mind quite frequently recently. And that is diet.

I appear to have been quite lucky (or ignorant) and have pretty much eaten what I wanted when I wanted over the past year (although I have cut down on coffee and only coffee). So maybe I am one of the lucky few who can avoid dietry changes. But I have begun to wonder if I will eventually be making myself worse over time. The past few months I have notced that I seem to get a lot more stomach cramping and trapped wind, so I can only presume that this may well be the start of things not going too well....

I probably should stop sticking my head in the sand with this. And maybe it is time to go to the GP's about it to sort out seeing whoever I need to see to sort this all out before it gets wayyyyy to late!

And finally! Thank you for such an awesome online community, who understand exactly what it is like to live with this 'evilness'

Love to all from a damn York (its raining, in Britian, in Summer! How stereotypical!)

Katy/Naty

Morning Naty,

I would say Happy Anniversary but with this disease it usually is not very happy. I think if you took a step towards dietary changes you may see an improvement in the stomach cramping. Luckily, you seem to be able to eat almost anything but that is a rarity with this disease. Maybe just a few steps forward with elimination of gluten and you might have more relief.

Love, Maggie

Katy,

As Gabes says, there is no right or wrong way... just your own way. You've had a lot on your plate, getting your academic life back on track (congratulations again!!!)... maybe now you've cleared a little room to look at the big diet question. It is definitely a project, and not an easy one to mesh with uni life. But now you have proven to yourself you can get the tough stuff done. Whenever you're ready, let us know how we can help... (or maybe you don't want dietary advice from me these days, after my little rhapsody about Lay's potato chips/crisps on another thread?)

The great thing about the diet experiment is that YOU are the expert. You know what you ate, you know how you feel afterwards. No professional, friend, family member, or fellow PPer can ever be more in charge of that than you are yourself. (This is, of course, also the down side!) What you put your attention on will reward your attention...

All my best,

Sara

Katy,

Your GP would have to be one in a thousand, to recommend diet changes, to control MC.

Nancy,

Sara's remarks about the potato chips are in this thread:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

My GP and my GI where both pretty keen to change my diet if i struggled to gain weight. So I think it would be good to go back to them... especially as it is free!

Hi Naty,

Nice to see an update from you and hear that your MC is behaving reasonably well. That's great that your Dr.'s are keen on the food angle. Hopefully, you're not one of us for whom gluten is pure poison, but it might be worth your while to do a little gluten elimination experiment to see if your tummy troubles ease.

Good luck with your upcoming visits - glad you're being proactive!!!

Love,
Kari
