Sick of being sick!!!
Hi everyone, here I am again. Seems I only come here when I am having some issue.
Hope everyone is doing well.
So over the past week and a half I have noticed that when I eat, and whatever I eat, within an hour or so I feel very anxious and grumpy. I have tried going back to my basic diet, even that makes me cranky and anxious. I hate this and I am very discouraged, it makes it difficult to function. I feel great in the morning before I eat and then I eat and feel bad. I get the brain fog, muscle tension, short temper and then very tired. I have eliminated the things I thought might be causing it other than stress and that is an ongoing thing in my life. No changes in my BM, all still well there, no gas or bloating, just feel really bad. I tend to get some dizziness also. I think I may have glutened myself accidentally last week but was unable to determine for sure.
Any ideas???
Thanks for letting me whine about it.

Hi Randy,
I'm sorry to hear about the issues. Remember, I'm not a doctor, but those symptoms remind me of systemic mastocytosis. You don't mention most of the obvious histamine-related symptoms, but systemic mastocytosis can definitely cause the cognitive changes that you listed. Of course, the fact that most patients never experience all of the symptoms described for any given disease is what makes the diagnosis of so many diseases a tricky project. I'm not saying that's what you're experiencing, but based on the symptoms that you describe, it certainly appears to be a possibility.
Are you eating any foods that contain high levels of histamine, or foods that are known to trigger mast cell degranulation?

I believe that Mary Beth is familiar with Dr. Mariana Castell’s research, and other doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, so maybe she can shed some light on your symptoms.

The cognitive changes consisted of diminished attention and memory, and the affective changes of anger, irritability, and, to a lesser extent, depression.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Randy,
There's a list, in the post at the link below. Also check out the link that Gloria posted in her response in that thread, for a more extensive list.

Good luck with this, and please keep us posted. More and more members are recognizing that they have mast cell issues, as we learn more about it.

Ok, looked up foods that contain histamine and found this article, that helped. Going to give it a try.

Will update later in the week and let you know how it goes. I do eat some of these foods, I like my eggs for sure, so that is going to be a challenge.

I think you're misinterpreting their chart. "All plain, cooked egg" is listed under "Foods Allowed ". It's eggs "prepared with restricted ingredients", that are restricted.

Thanks Tex for pointing that out.
I will read this again later when I can focus.
I must say, reading the article about the systemic mastocytosis was like looking in a mirror. Very very interesting.
I have pretty bad sinus issues along with many of the other symptoms that they describe and they come and go.
Thanks for the info.

Randy,
The symptoms of systemic masto and mast cell activation disorder are the same. The difference is people diagnosed with systemic mast have abnormalities in bone marrow and people with MCAD have normal bone marrow. There are varying degrees of symptoms for both diseases. Brain/cognitive/neuro symptoms are very common in both diseases.
I have found that if I eat really fresh eggs I have less symptoms than from older, watery eggs. When I am in a flare I don't eat eggs at all but when I am not in a flare I can have them but take a histame capsule in the hopes that the extra enzymes will help remove the histamine more quickly.
