scope prep and a reaction test

Post by Gabes-Apg »

i thought i should set up new thread rather than block up Nancy's fish oil thread

the scope prep they have given to me this time is very different to what I did last time so it will be interesting to see how it goes, their instructions

4pm i take 3 bisacodyl tablets and 4 epsom salt capsules (yep evil soy based capsules).
5pm first glass of picoprep 1.5 litres of water and/or apple juice
7pm second glass of picoprep another 1.5 litres of water and/or apple juice
D will would have started (it would have started about 4.30pm from the evil soy caps anyways) and will continue for several hours
I plan on starting it 1 - 2 hours earlier so i am not falling asleep on the toilet at 10pm!

given i have been feeling poorly the past few weeks, I had been quite unsettled mentally and emotionally about the hard work and diligence I have invested for MC management (lifestyle and strict diet), but this has not protected me from issues and symptoms.
If I went and ate out at a risky place and got contaminated then having symptoms would be justified. With this unsettlement i have had really strong cravings for foods i have not had for almost two years, even with the trip to france last year and all the tempations around me there i did not crave thngs like bread, pastries and icecream like i have this past fortnight

as I am going to be doing the scope prep (with the evil soy based capsules), i figured if there was a time to test some of the foods i have avoided for almost 2 years then this week was the time, (mindful after the scopes i will be having lots of nurturing foods to help my gut recover from the prep and the scopes)

last saturday i had some fresh bread, i didnt go over the top with the treat, just fresh bread with my GF/DF/SF spread. i enjoyed every light fluffy element of it. I had a mild 'mc mud' reaction 4 hours later and the only other symptom has been joint aches for the past 3 days, so gut inflammation and leaky gut wise i must be doing ok

that has cured the savoury craving, now i am really craving ice cream, baskin robbins two scoop sundae icecream. (hokey pokey and boysenberry swirl) (prior to MC, most of the semi major decisions of my life were contemplated while i had a baskin robbins sundae)
A friend and I are going to have an ice cream party on friday night,
i have a quiet 'at home' weekend planned and it will be interesting to see how my body reacts to decent serve of dairy

Having the bread and the not so major reaction has helped me to be able to appreciate how far i have progressed inflammation/leaky gut wise and the hard work to date has been worth it.

Morning Gabes,

Well I guess if you have the cravings there is no time like the present with the prep coming up to savor a treat. I tried a cheese treat over the weekend and hubby threw the cheese out yesterday since I reacted so badly. The joint aches are there yesterday and today so I learned my lesson. Baskin Robbins has been on my wish list recently but will now refrain after this weekend.

Take care and enjoy that double scoop.

Love, Maggie

Gabes,
Good luck with your testing and keep us posted with your results. None of these awful preps are fun are they? I'll be thinking of you.

Gabes,
Will keep you in my thoughts this weekend. When I saw the epsom salt tablets on your list, I thought why can't you take the equivalent amount of epsom salt crystals instead of the capsules? Never thought of satisfying a craving prior to the prep. Maybe I'll try that prior to my next prep (prolly in about 5 years!).
Take care

Gabes, I'll be thinking of you too.

I hope you get back to feeling good soon. It's so discouraging when you do everything right, and still feel bad.

Love,
Martha

Oh Gabes,

So sorry to hear about the difficult time you've been having. That MC roller coaster is the pits. You know, I have had 3 colonoscopies now and have also been tempted to eat sensitive foods prior to cleanout. After that last go-round with the corrosive Miralax (glad you are not having that) I have decided that the next time I am going to have a giant vanilla milkshake, among other things. So you GO, girl!

Just a thought......you might want to ask your doc to have your colon biopsy specimens checked for mast cells (more than 20 per high power microscopic field is positive for mastocytic enterocolitis). Given your rocky history, it might make sense to check for this type of MC, and this is the only way to diagnose it. Perhaps you can give your doc some printouts on ME - Mary Beth can help with that, I'm sure.

I missed your original post. Did you say you are having both colonoscopy and endoscopy? When?

Two years is indeed a long time for a diet trial. SOOO discouraging. But look at Maggie, who needed 10 years to see full results. And me - after 10 years of diet, I was able to fine-tune even more with MRT. If I had to bet, I would say that you are still being exposed to food offenders that are yet to be identified.

Hang in there, dear friend. And good luck with the procedures.

Love,

Polly

Hi Gabes in just wanted to say good luck and best wishes for your scopes. I can imagine the frustration that you must be feeling after working this hard over the past 20 months? It does seem to me that you have identified some excellent tools in acupuncture, BIA coupled with a strict diet regimen. That is good news that you have showers some improvement with the bread.

An ice cream party, now that sounds a much better prep than the tablets your doctor prescribed... Maybe for some MC patients a dairy and gluten meal would work just fine (only kidding)

Best of wishes for your procedure, it will be interesting to see what the results will be, especially with the GERD.

thanks to all for the support

Polly - yes i am having upper and lower scopes, not really MC related, investigation of the valves to see if they figure out the regurgitation issues, and look at piles and pelvic floor issues.
the scopes are tomorrow (monday morning my time)

the joint aches from the bread treat lasted the whole week, it was a reminder why i dont really miss having gluten.

Even though it was freezing cold friday night, i still had the ice-cream. My mouth started salvivating as soon as I walked in, it was devine way way better than the bread treat. there was basically no reaction.
research via the web later revealed that i had chosen flavours that didnt have soy. So it proves that i can have small amounts of dairy.

i am in the first phase of the prep, lots of gurgling and gut discomfort.

again, thanks to all for the heartfelt support,

take care

the tummy is grumbling and the cleanse out is proceeding

Gabes,

I hope the prep is not too aggravating, and the exams go smoothly, today.

Hi Gabes,

I've enjoyed reading about your "forbidden treats", as I've been dreaming about Pizza and ice cream lately  . There are a couple of Italian restaurants near me in Denver that offer gluten free pizza. I know I can indulge in a little cheese without major issues, but have not tried tomatoes yet - so I'm working up to it. Your note about the ice cream is very encouraging - soooo glad you got to enjoy it!!!

Lots of luck with tomorrow's procedures, as well as the prep:( - I'll be thinking about you.

Love and hugs,
Kari
