I was surprised we felt it up here in Boston at Hanscom AFB, about 750 miles away. It was not too strong, but did cause a lot of our sensitive optical equipment in the clean rooms to shut down.

I hope everyone is ok in that area

Hope all are safe and well and not too shook up by the event.

I was 2km from the epicentre of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake. it can quite unnerving.

All good here in DC. Traffic getting out of the city was the only misery associated with the quake. I didn't feel the recent 4.2 aftershock. I grew up with earthquakes in Central America, so I was relieved to learn it wasn't a terrorist attack on the White House or the metro station beneath my building. The media is begging for footage of damage, but there just isn't any! We got lucky.

I'm a lifelong Marylander and surely never thought I would experience an earthquake unless it was when I was vacationing in California!

What a strange sensation. I'm on the fifth floor of my office building and we were definitely rocking and rolling. Minor damage around the area, but otherwise all is well.

Mother nature once again reminding us who is in charge!

Glad to hear everyone is OK. I knew we had several members from the DC/Maryland area and I was thinking about you when I heard it on the news.

Everything is OK here in northern Maryland. I was on the road during the quake and didn't feel anything. It was unnerving to come home to find out that no phones were working - neither landline nor cell phone for a few hours. Texting worked though......I wonder why (?).

Now we have a hurricane (Irene) approaching the east coast. Wish us luck!

Hugs,

Polly

I'm glad you're all OK and there wasn't a lot of damage. It seems strange to hear about an earthquake in the East.

Polly,
All the cell phones were in such high use that they clogged the networks, but text messages use much less "bandwidth"(?), so messages got through. Even the news said it's better to use texts in an emergency.

The only scary thing to happen was the nuclear power plant in Lake Anna that had to go to backup power. That gives me pause - lots of old nuclear plants on the east coast among heavily populated areas. Apparently they were all built to withstand a 6.0 earthquake  .

DC is lucky to have a limitation on building heights due to security. They cannot be taller than the Washington Monument, so roughly 11 floors max. My husband was on the 15th floor of his office in Bethesda, MD and felt major swaying and movement of the building. His company is the largest construction company in town, so I imagine they are very busy today!

I was on the lawn mower and never felt a thing.
Mom says she did feel it. she was sitting in a chair in the living room and she uses a spongy sort of coushin to sit on.
The people next door said they didn't feel it either but I have heard of a few that were aware when it happened.
Glad everyone is OK.

I spoke with my son on the Jersey shore. He said they were in lounge chairs by the pool and thought a wise guy was shaking his chair. Never thinking it was an earthquake. I'm 40 miles west of Boston and never felt a thing.

Now Hurricane Irene is another story. My aunt is turning 100 next week and we have a big party planned for Sunday, the day Irene is to hit here and guess what? My aunt's name is Irene. So ironic that Irene may cancel Irene's 100th birthday party. Bummer!!
