Hurricane Irene

Brace yourselves for Hurricane Irene. Looks like all of us on the East Coast will suffer her effects.

We were going to celebrate my Aunt Irene's 100th birthday on Sunday and that is the day the hurricane is suppose to hit here so we rescheduled it for the following weekend. How ironic is that?

Looks like the Carolina's are going to get hit hard so take care everyone and keep us posted on how you are doing.

The projected path along the coast is scary. They are saying it could be devastating for N. Y. City if it passes directly over. My hubby is leaving tonight to go to Ocean City, MD, where his 95 yr. old mom lives. If they evacuate the city he will bring her to our house. Otherwise he will ride out the storm with her. She lives in a very old frame cottage just 1/2 block from the ocean.

Polly,

Having lived through Ike a few years ago (and we are 70 miles inland) I would suggest they not stay there, even if there is not an evacuation. There was lots of debris, trees down, broken windows etc and we were out of power for 11 days with no generator. It was awful so we ended up leaving after the storm.

Hopefully everyone stays safe and gets out of the way of Irene.

Polly, I second Mary Beth's comments. It would be better to get her to your home than try and wait it out in Ocean City.

Mandatory evacuations are now in place for Ocean City, so it looks like Polly will be adding another houseguest.
I know those cottage style homes well, having stayed in them as a child. Quaint, but not designed to withstand hurricanes.

I do hope predictions are wrong and Irene skirts by the east coast rather than giving it a direct hit.

Reading the updates on Hurricane Irene, I find myself quite concerned for the well-being of all folks on the East Coast. I sure hope nothing takes a direct hit, and I really hope NYC doesn't. That would be just awful for so many reasons.

Praying for everyone and everything (including the wild horses on the Outer Banks),

I posted in another thread - NYC is transferring all hospital and nursing home patients to facilities upstate. The storm surge threat is serious!! I lived many years in a town on the Connecticut shore next to Bridgeport. They could be in serious trouble too with the storm surge.

But on another note...Tex has mentioned this before...I heard a report on NPR this morning about the drought in Texas. It is truly devastating. Lakes and streams drying up. Fish and wildlife seriously affected. Cattle farmers selling off their stressed cows and goats and closing down their businesses for good. Horses literally being given away at auctions. Fires igniting with the slightest provocation.

What next!?!

I am praying for all on the eastern seaboard.

My brother lives in Maryland, right on the Chesapeake Bay, with just a road between them and the bay. They lost their house to Hurricane Isabel in 2003, so we are praying that they won't have a similar experience with Irene.

Thank you, Zizzle, for reminding us of our brethren in Texas. I had not seen any postings from Texas about the conditions down there. In fact, it wasn't until yesterday that I learned just how dire things have become in Texas when I spoke with a client in Dallas.

Sending prayers for rain there, while praying for safety of those on the East Coast.

We are following the news on Hurricane Irene very closely and are extremely worried about it.

Even if it finally reaches you as a Cat 1 it is going to be huge.

I am glad to know that there is a mandatory evacuation order for Ocean City, as we were worried to know that your hubby´s intention was to stay there so close to the sea...

That was not a good idea...
Better to be all together...

Polly, please keep us updated. When are they expected to arrive home?
Hope that everything goes on fine.

Please, stay safe. What about your emergeny preparedness? Are you prepared?
This is also valid for all the rest of you on the path of Irene.

Every one out in the high risk area – please, take all recommended precautions. This is stress that's not needed for folks with gut problems!!

In either 1969 or 70?? We were living temporarily out on LI when a fairly strong hurricane came up the coast, the eye “nicking” the very eastern end of the island. We knew, out where we were, that “weather” was approaching, but the severity was really not known (or perhaps not appreciated?). Our house (which was a big old 2 story house), sat right up on the N shore across the street from the cliff over looking the LI Sound.

The wind and rain intensity all night long was like nothing I had experienced, … before or since. Home alone, with 2 kids and a dog, husband away on business!! NO SLEEP!! That old house creaked and groaned, and the deluge of water pounded for hours. OMG!

Thankfully, we escaped virtually undamaged in our area with the exception of the dirt road that lead down to the beach, which had been severely eroded by the water overload.

The following morning when everything had passed I went up the street to coffee with a friend. Their house, and thus their kitchen window, looked directly out over the Sound. We sat and marveled at what we could see in Connecticut that morning – there was Bridgeport, in all it’s glory, every structure clearly visible to the naked eye. All the smog which normally hung out over the Sound had been cleared out by the storm. Of course, by a day later, the city of Bridgeport was pretty much again hidden in the smog, never to be clearly seen again (from our vantage point anyway).

Batten down the hatches all. Hoping and praying this storm will not be as intense as is being predicted.

My son lives on the Jersey Shore and they are suppose to get hit quite hard. He is not right on the beach, but only a couple of miles back. My daughter and husband are at their home on the south coast of RI. She is close and can see the water from their home.

I hope all of our NYC friends are ready. I don't think we will get the brunt of it here in Central MA, but will get some good winds and rain.

We'll all have to catch up after tomorrow.

Stay safe everyone who is in Irene's path.

800,000 power outages already. DC area is soaked with rain and beginning to flood in parts, but winds aren't expected until later tonight.
