L'Oreal True Match makeup -- GF?

Post by Sharaine »

I've had a headache since Friday. I think some of it is due to strain while working in the garden. I'm also wondering now if the make up I put on Monday and Tuesday may have gluten in it. I looked at the ingredient list but it's greek to me. Here's the link:http://www.lorealparisusa.com/_us/_en/d ... lay:_blank}

Tex, do you know the answer?

Thanks,
Sharaine

Sharaine,

Little is known about some of those ingredients. Some of them give me a headache, just trying to figure out how to pronounce them. LOL.

As far as I am aware, though, none of them are known to be associated with headaches, (nor with triggering other MC symptoms).

Does it have a noticeable scent? Some of us are quite sensitive to certain chemical odors, and a common reaction in that type of situation is a headache.

Sharaine,

I sure don't know the specifics, but can tell you that I do react 'weirdly' to cosmetic ingredients other than gluten (and always have, before MC). I definitely don't do well with certain fragrances (even in laundry detergent), but can't say for sure whether that's your culprit. Tocopherol can be a code-word for 'wheat germ' or soy - it's a cousin or component of Vitamin E and is sometimes used in cosmetics (sadly, more 'natural' cosmetics are even more prone to using those sorts of ingredients).

There are some GF/SF brands out there - I am not familiar with products of this type (I got stuck at lipstick/lip-gloss, and called it good)... but there are some good listings in various forums here... I liked the Honeybee Gardens lip products I got (maybe through iHerb??). I recently developed a craving for mascara, and will let you know how that turns out. (I am very conservative about putting things in/near my eyes, so it may take a while!)

Hopefully someone will have a recommendation for a product similar to the one you've chosen from L'Oreal. I've had mysterious headaches from fragrances, cosmetics, cleaning products, etc. - I'm sorry you're going through it. I stopped using rinse aid in my dishwasher, because it had a fragrance I could smell, and creeped me out. (I now use white vinegar, which - come to think of it - might not be GF... YIKES!) Lots of sympathy, and hope it clears up, soon.

Thank you both, Tex and Sara. I don't know what is going on with me. All I know is I have a headache and it is not a migraine. I have seen the chiropractor twice this week and got a massage yesterday ... all to little avail. I've tried Extra Strength Tylenol, showers, stretching. Today, I only put on blush, eye shadow and mascara. (I don't react to those like you do, Sara). The reality is I don't usually wear the base make-up. I put it on Monday and Tuesday because I looked like hell due to the headache.

Tex, I am with you on the pronunciation of some of those ingredient names. Actually reading them tonight gave me pause. I need to care more about what I put on my face. God only knows what those things really are. I used to trust the government to guarantee things were safe. Was raised to respect government and those in power. Suddenly at 51, I'm not so willing nor able to do so.

Sharaine,

I totally appreciate the irony that you put that stuff on to make yourself look better (and feel better when you see yourself in the mirror!), and it made you feel worse.

I went through a long stretch where I could tell how my day was going to be by what color my skin was, first thing in the morning. Gray-green... not so good. Who knew dark circles under our eyes could get down to our knees?

Hope you shake it fast. I'm not sure I really know what I do and don't tolerate, and have sort of thrown the baby out with the bathwater. (The upside is, when I do make an effort, it really shows...)

Also right there with you in amazement that no one is looking out for our interests, but in fact if anything the government is actively promoting industry interests. We get pretty outraged about products from overseas with iffy ingredients...

All my best,

S

Sara,

FWIW, both apple cider vinegar and distilled vinegar are GF. You can find old celiac articles that claim otherwise, but they are wrong.

Be aware, however, that certain blended vinegars may contain gluten, because they're blended after distillation. The same goes for certain blended alcoholic beverages, such as wine coolers. Anything blended after the distillation process is highly suspect.

Thanks, Tex - I had long ago seen that white/distilled vinegar is non-GF. That's what I'm using as a rinse aid in the dishwasher - I use it in laundry, too... Can't say I love the smell of it, but I hate the smell of chemical stuff much, much more!

Sharaine, hope today's a better day.

Morning,

Well, the headache kept waking me up all night so at 4am I took one of my migraine tablets - MaxAlt. Then I took a shower. Finally got a little sleep. Felt better until I got up and started moving around. No make up for me today. I think I'm going to call my GP and see if I can get in. I'm starting to wonder if I injured the vertebrae in my neck. I hope not.

Thank you for the warm thoughts and encouragement, Sara.

Hugs, Sharaine

Sharaine,

FWIW, my reactions were always accompanied by a stiff, sore neck. Anytime I was in a flare, my neck felt as though I were having a world-class case of the flu. Sometimes it would hang on, long after the flare had ended. And, of course, a stiff sore neck is almost always accompanied by a headache, at least part of the time.

Hugs,
Tex
