I was glutened because of Hurricane Irene
Hi all,
Well, we lost power 2:30 am Sunday morning, thanks to Hurricane Irene, because a tree went down on our block and went right into a transformer, downing our power lines. We remained without power until Thursday when it was restored at 5:25 pm. Our sump pump doesn't work without electric and we had 7 inches of water in the basement and the water was still rising when we finally located a generator that we hooked the sump pump to. I lost all the food in the refrigerator and two freezers. To top it off, our neighbors huge oak tree came down on our deck. It missed our house by inches and there was minimal damage to the deck. We couldn't believe it. We are still cleaning up in the basement and have suspended showings of our home until we are finished cleaning up. It really smells bad in the basement. The tree on the deck was removed on Thursday.
I didn't watch what I was eating, we were eating out and some dinners were provided by my relatives. I didn't feel that I could be picky, there was too much going on. I was definitely glutened.
My daughter rode out the storm here and we drove her back to Hoboken, NJ on Monday because railroad service was still suspended. My son who lives in Astoria, NY was in a zone that had a mandatory evacuation didn't come home, he went to visit friends in Providence, RI, he said it wasn't too bad there.
I go back to my GI on Tuesday, he is weaning me off of the Entocort, hopefully I will do all right.
So its back to the basement for me now.
Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Susanne,
What a traumatic week you've had! Luckily the tree didn't fall on your house, but your basement has taken a bad hit. I feel for you trying to clean up the mess, especially if you are trying to sell your house.
I'd say getting glutened is probably the most recoverable event that has happened to you. Good luck with seeing your GI and going off Entocort.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
WOW, Susanne - that's quite a week indeed. It must be hard to be relieved that that tree "missed" when you feel like you've been "hit" in so many other ways... but of course, you must be relieved that the house itself was spared. Yikes...
I hope your post-gluten recovery is speedy, and best of luck getting the basement and the whole house back into shape for showing, too. I can certainly see why you didn't feel you could be fussy, with everything else that was going on.
Feel better,
Sara

Susanne,
I'm sorry to hear of the problems, but I'm glad that they weren't any worse.
If the basement odor turns out to be a persistent problem, (and remember that we tend to get used to odors after a while, so that we may not notice them as much after a while, even though they are still there), I have a couple of suggestions for handling that.
One possibility is to use a biological odor eliminator, which usually comes in a plastic bottle with a spray pump on top, and contains ingredients such as triethylene glycol, benzethonium chloride, and tetrasodium EDTA. You can usually find such products at medical supply stores. I've never checked, but some pharmacies may also carry these, for all I know. Incidentally, FWIW, benzethonium chloride has been found to be one of the best products available for killing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, (MRSA), otherwise known as the notorious flesh-eating bacteria. Biological odor eliminators actually eliminate the odors and the sources of the odors.
Another possibility is to simply mask the odor with some other scent. Believe it or not, apple scent is one of the most effective around, even though it's actually a very weak scent, (that is, it doesn't leave a strong, overbearing, "suspicious" scent). It's available as a powder, and I believe it may be available in liquid form, also. The reason why I'm familiar with it is because I used to use it to flavor corn, to sell as "Apple-Scented Deer Corn", back when I used to sell zillions of truckloads of that stuff every year. Actually, the deer don't care if the corn is flavored or not, but people who feed deer, love it.
The way that apple scent originally became popular, was as a coverup scent, for salvaged grain. Whenever there's a train derailment, or a huge grain storage tank comes apart at the seams, and many tons of grain are spilled, often, before the grain can be recovered, it may be rained on or snowed on, or otherwise damaged by moisture, and it will develop a nasty, sour grain odor. Someone discovered that by adding a little apple scent to that grain, as it's being recovered, or processed later, the strong odor of sour grain can easily be completely masked. Of course, such grain is no longer eligible for use as human food, but it can be salvaged for feedlot use.
Anyway, in case you should need something, these things definitely work.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

We lost power for 3 days---and it has happened before so hubby went and order one of those generators --watch(not that I wouldnt mind) we probably wont have any more major storms where it knocks out ya power
I was only concerned about my ice cream--which I DID open the refrig to nibble at it--sorta got yelled at
but then I got smart and opened it when hubby wasnt around---*sneaky*
Stay well and lets hope the sun keeps shining and the winds stay low~~~~

Hi all,
I'm finally out of the basement!!!! 6 more bags of garbage were removed from the basement. The washer, dryer and freezer work fine despite being in the flood water. I need to have the furnace checked, but I believe it's okay too. Besides the bags of garbage, we have some items to throw out, believe it or not, they were stored in rubbermaid containers that started to float, then flipped and water got into them. So there will be alot at my curb for the garbage men this week.
Tex's suggestion of the spraying apple scent oil worked, it's masking the smell nicely. We are running a dehumidifier constantly and the basement is finally dry. Thanks so much, Tex!!!
I'm getting back to gluten, diary and egg free and hopefully I'll do okay being weaned of the Entocort. I see the GI dr. tomorrow.
Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.

WOW, that's remarkable progress on the basement! You clearly didn't spend as much time moaning and flailing as I likely would have done in those circumstances. I can't believe the Rubbermaids floated, then flipped... I can totally picture it, but who'd ever see that coming?
We just got back from dropping my nephew off at college - along the parkways, we saw tons of downed, split, and uprooted trees, and deadwood, and a whole barbecue grill that must have blown out of a yard and gotten stuck against the guard rail. Once we got off the big roads and into the towns, we saw a lot of stuff put out for trash pickup - you were not alone in this effort this weekend! The Connecticut River, everywhere we crossed it, is still visibly high and full of silt.
Best of luck with the diet, and with weaning off Entocort. I hope your GI appointment is helpful, too...

Suzanne,
You really knocked yourself out cleaning your basement. I'm glad that Tex's suggestion to use the apple scent oil is working. Perhaps you'll be able to put your home back on the market soon.
Good luck with your GI appointment tomorrow.

Morning Suzanne,
So sorry to hear that the storm had such an impact on your home and also getting glutened to boot was sure no picnic. Glad to hear the basement weathered the storm and that things are slowly returning to normal.
