Help! I need an ARK!

Post by Polly »

Hi Friends,

We are drowning here - 9 inches of rain in the last 2 days with at least another day to go. It's POURING as I write. It's from "Lee" which is moving up the inside of the east coast. My pond just overflowed, dragging lots of mud into it, despite the fact that we have been continually pumping water out. Ratz. I can't ever recall seeing this much rain in such a short time (we only got 3 1/2 inches last week with Irene). Am hoping the roof doesn't spring any leaks and that we don't lose power.

Texans.......how I wish I could divert this rain to you.

Love,

Soggy Polly

Polly,

It's no wonder we're drying up and blowing away here in Texas, with you East-Coasters hogging all the rain, that way.

Seriously, that's a heck of a note, because that much rain on soil that was already soaked from last week's rains, will cause a lot of environmental damage. I'm afraid that's what's going to happen here, when the drought is finally broken, because with all the soil in a powdery-dry state, and nearly all of the grass dead, erosion will be a major problem, with any substantial rains. Maybe we'll be lucky, and the rains will fall "just right", but that's not the way that it usually works.

At least, big rains seem to make the frogs happy. We haven't seen or heard a frog around here in about a year, now. :sigh:

Love,
Tex

We're pretty sodden here, too - maybe we should start working on the water pipeline to Texas. I had bought new boots, and left them in the car (they actually smelled too "new car"-ish for me)... so yesterday I had to slog out through the puddles *before* I could get my boots on.

Polly, I hope the roof holds and the creek doesn't rise, and - yikes, thinking of you,

I've never been so relieved to have bought a house on a hilltop. Extra-long gutter extenders and we're golden - nice, dry basement. Of course we'll lose power before virtually everyone else. My son's school lost power yesterday. This amount of drenching rain is really something to behold. Lots of road closures around DC already.

Still here but this is my last post before the Outer Banks.

We had between 11 & 13" with Irene and since yesterday have had 10" more. I want to run that pipeline to Tex's town. We have trees dropping like matchsticks.

Love and see you in a couple of weeks.

Yikes- that's alot of rain Polly. Hope the damage is minimal.

The weather in Texas is so crazy. The 100+ degree weather has subsided and now we are having a cool spell - it was in the 50s this morning. It's a gorgeous day . . .but everything is just brown and dusty. I wish you could give us some of that rain too.

That's a lot of rain, Maggie and Polly. I hope you don't get any more. It's so sad to see beautiful trees fall.

I feel for Texans. Drought and a fire and no end in sight for either. Tex, is your corn crop a total loss this
year?

Hi Gloria,

The corn crop was rather pathetic around here, but it wasn't a total loss - it made roughly a fourth of a normal yield. It was better to the north of us, and worse to the south. Fortunately, corn prices are pretty decent this year, so that will help. It was harvested back in July, at least a month earlier than normal, (due to the drought).

Tex,

I'm glad it wasn't a total loss, but it's still a loss. That's one of the hazards of farming for a living - you're very dependent on the weather. I don't think I could live with the risk it involves.
