Thank you all for your kindness. I am afraid I spent my b'day sick. I have been in a nasty flare for three months and can't seem to get it under control. However, I am seeing an alternative doc and an endocrinologist. I am now waiting on test results. My alternative doc is all about diet and has done a lot of allergy testing. So we will see.....

I have moved to the Paleo diet and I do feel better most of the time, BUT I continue to lose weight (98#'s 5'5"). I am no longer able to rotate the foods but try my best not to eat the same thing every day. I just finished reading the thread Pat posted and that is such good news. Amazingly my GI who is at the point he will prescribe anything and everything has never mentioned Pentasa. Well, I might mention it to my new docs. I would like to gain weight and the thought of eating out..........do people really do that  ! My hubby now goes alone to our group social when they are eating out at a restaurant; too much anxiety for me!

I hope to report something better after my visits next week.

Please keep our part of Texas (South) in your prayers; we are scorched and are fighting a lot of fires now with no rain in sight and then there are the people on the East Coast who need sunshine. Love, G

Hi Ginny,

I'm so sorry that you spent your birthday feeling sick. I hope your new doctors can make you well again and help you to gain back some weight. I'm curious about Pentasa, too, after reading Pat's post. She is however, also taking Entocort at present. Let's hope her success continues after she stops taking Entocort.

I'll be interested in your progress and experiences with the alternative doctor and endocrinologist. I've considered going to the same types of doctors, but still don't fully trust that any doctor can fix my problem. I'm afraid I will just end up spending a lot of $$$ on needless tests, herbs, and experimental treatments and be no better off. Hopefully, you will prove my suspicions to be incorrect.

Ginny,

I'm sorry too, that your birthday was spoiled by MC.

I just wanted to comment on the remarks about Pentasa: We all respond differently to the various medications, and so until we have actually tried them, we can't be sure that they might not work for us. The 5-ASA drugs are all based on the same active ingredient, (mesalamine), but they all have slightly different methods of presentation of the active ingredient, (and different inactive ingredients), so it's conceivably possible that we might respond to them differently, and one or more might work, while the others do not.

Also, I sometimes wonder if the timing of a drug regimen might affect the outcome. IOW, we might be more receptive to certain drugs, at certain phases of our disease. We know, for example, that diet has a lot to do with our symptoms, so just because we may have tried a drug, and it didn't seem to help, at one point in our "disease cycle", doesn't mean that we might not show a more favorable response to it at another stage. And, of course, taking two or more drugs in combination sometimes backfires, if we react adversely to one of the drugs, but on the other hand, in some cases, a combination might work symbiotically.

One thing's for sure - our working knowledge of this disease hasn't scratched the surface of what we need to know about it. I truly believe that somewhere, there is a combination of diet and meds that will work for each of us, (even though it won't work for all of us), if we can only find it.

Good luck with your new doctors.

Love,
Tex

Thanks Tex and Gloria for your thoughts. I'm pretty discouraged at this point; mainly due to my continued loss weight. It is very difficult to find clothes that are appropriate for my age. Quality of life is now most important and as much as I would like to resolve this by food alone, I am willing to look at every option.

Gloria, you are right about the cost; I just spent out of my pocket another $370 for specialized tests. This will be the last of it unless someone can give me specific reasons to do anymore. I will say that my alternative doc took me off of everything except Vit D-3 for right now and surprisingly I have not had any leg cramps due to no calcium. I am sure she will re-evaluate after our meeting. The Endocrinologist says there are ways to meet my needs by shots vs more pills that have lactose or other ingredients that I can not stand. The very reason I have not had a bone scan in 2 years; more meds!

My sister who is 71 is also now suffering with gastro issues. She has eliminated gluten and cheeses (I'm assuming all dairy, but don't know) and is eating a lot of veggies and fiber supplement. Without telling her what to do, I have indicated that fiber would not be the rout to go, but she researches a lot and is pretty opinionated. Since my mother had bouts with diarrhea, obviously this is an inherited gene.

I will keep you posted in the next week and try to participate more in our group again. Much love, G
