I had qu. regarding Pepto Bismol and spoke to a nurse there. She said when you gain control (9 daily), then you continue the same treatment for however long it took you to gain control....i.e. if it took you 3 1/2 weeks to gain control, then you continue same treatment for another 3 1/2 weeks. That is a little different than what I had read before.
I asked if taking caplets as opposed to chewables made a difference. She said she didn't know, however, the chewables would absorb faster, and that's what he used.
I asked what probiotic Dr. Fine uses, and she said Culturelle.
I told her I was concerned about whether or not my BP, thyroid, medicines are being absorbed or did I lose them with D. She said she thought they were being absorbed. Some meds absorb quickly, but it depends on the type medicine. She didn't think that would be a problem.
I asked about MRT, because I would like a better understanding of that, and she gave me a name and number of someone who she said is very knowledgeable in that field.
I asked if there was anything else she could tell me that might help me get better control, along with diet and PB, and she said digestive enzymes, and Dr. Fine uses one called "Digest Gold". The site is - www.theorganicalternative.com
I found it also on Vitacost.com.
I have been on PB now for 7 days, and still things are the same. But, I stay optimistic, because I have to. A little disappointing, however. We leave on the 20th for our trip, and I am still hoping for better relief/control. It is what it is, and I'm ready either way.

Garina,
I have used Digest Gold in the past (before MC!), and was a fan. I think we respond very individually to these sorts of things. I used the caplets, because chewing the chewables was kind of - PINK! When I was really sick, I chewed them, because that's what I had on hand when I read about their potential benefit. I told my husband, "these aren't so bad" (I have always hated them!), and he said, "wow, you must be really miserable."
I love what you said... it is what it is. I hope that what it turns out to be for you is *wonderful* on this cruise. Not perfect, perhaps... but a real joy, with your symptoms turned down to background level or less, and you can ponder further when you return.
Perhaps we'll be doing MRT together this fall - I think there are q

Perhaps we'll be doing MRT together this fall - I think quite a few of us are heading in that direction.
BTW I did not take PB for very long, and felt I cut it down too fast... this is useful info, about the duration of treatment. I recently read about a different formulation of Bismuth, and wondered whether it might not be better for me, since it does not contain salicylates (but it's not available in the U.S. so it's kind of a theoretical question!).
All my best for a great trip, and hope you're feeling better every day,
Sara

Thanks Sara, for your kind words and wishes. The trip will be fun no matter what.
Mary Beth,
I will email you with a few questions about MRT, probably not until we get back from our trip. I do plan on MRT testing in the future, and thank you.
Zizzle,
I didn't know there was a newer MRT test, but I would wait for that, also. Thanks for that info.
Wonderful that you only need 2 PB at this point with controlled D. I am hoping for the same success. The thing that bothers me the most about taking PB is the tinnitus. I hope at least most of it subsides after a while.
