That's a common symptom with Asacol, and so it probably applies to the other mesalamine-based drugs as well.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

It's one of the reasons I refused treatment with Asacol. Call me vain, but my hair is very thin and shedding too much already! Unless there was some guarantee that it would cure me, I couldn't do it.

My hair was thinning because of gluten sensitivity (I thought it was a middle-aged thing) - since getting my diet in order it's much thicker. So it could be the medication, or it could be continued reaction to something you're eating, that you haven't figured out yet.

Good luck,

I had thinning hair when I was taking asacol. My hair thickened when I stopped taking it. One of my antidepressants can cause thinning hair also. I mentioned this to my psychiatrist. He had me take 400mcg of selenium. He even told me I would find it in 200mcg doses so take 1 in the morning & one in the evening. Guess a few patients had mentioned that side effect! So far the selenium has stopped my hair from getting any thinner.

Don't know if selenium would help with the asacol. Dr. Fine answered my email almost 10 years ago & told me that asacol can also cause D in some people also - another reason I stopped taking that med.

Good luck.

Hi W!

One of our members, CA Mary, had the same trouble. She found a product that stopped the thinning, if I remember correctly. You might try sending her a PM to find out its name.

Hugs,

Polly

Excess hair loss, hair thinning is quite often link to deficieny in Folic Acid/folate

Depending on what your current eating plan is, if you are avoiding grains and legumes this may explain the deficiency.

have had any blood tests recently to check your Vit B levels?

I noticed some thinning hair initially with the Imuran, but Gabes had suggested back last October to try folic acid and that did help

What levels of folic acid are we looking at to be adequate? I am going for my annual physical tomorrow and I want to have that and my "B" levels checked.
