Presentation about chronic gastro infections - biofilms

Post by sarkin »

Forgive me if this has been posted before - I found it in my recent curiosity about biofilms:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/18583142/Gut- ... Infections

It is geared toward parents of kids on the autism spectrum, and has interesting detail about different bacterial species and what combo works to disrupt the biofilm & knock out the bad bugs... Not sure there's any clear take-away message or action item for us, but I hope someone else also finds it interesting... and maybe some day even helpful?

Love,
Sara

Editing because I found the link that led me to the presentation above - it's a lot of speculative stuff, but from a smart guy, so worth taking with a grain of salt: http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com ... eases.html

HI Sara, I appreciate this information. In addition to being a School Psychologist, I am the Autism Intervention Team Coordinator for a Special Ed Cooperative. It's true that many children with Autism have GI problelms; more than you'd find in the general population. I had not read much on biofilms so I'm looking forward to seeing this presentation in depth, probably this weekend (inbetween college football games  ) when I have more time.

thanks for the post and link.

Carol,

I'll be interested in what you think when you've had more chance to ponder.

All my best,

Sara, I responded to this at least a week ago. If I can't find it in drafts I'll repost. I don't want you to think that I was ignoring you or that I won't follow through. Maybe I made a mistake with I submitted. ?
thanks

Sara, It was certainly worthwhile to read this powerpoint.
A vast majority of children with autism have gastrointestinal problems. Certainly diet changes will help that. Among students I work with the parents that have tried a gluten free diet and have stuck to it rigidly, a few have said they thought their child was processing information more clearly. And it could be that as their gut was calmer there were fewer internal distractions to deal with, so their focus on external stimuli was improved. Children with ASD are not able to filter out sensations and in fact feel them with a much greater intensity than the rest of us. Any reduction in an unpleasant stimuli would be a welcomed thing.

Do I think this will be the cure to autism as some authors have said? Sadly no. If someone says a diet fixed their child's autism, I would question whether they had an accurate diagnosis to begin with. The latest medical studies are pointing to numerous assaults on DNA and to environmental factors like a steady increase of PCBs absorbed by all of us from plastics and styrofoams, etc. Since it is on the rise globally (and I am often a skeptic but the data seems to hold up) then it does lead us to think that autism has to be triggered by toxic environmental factors.

thanks so much for sharing this link. I didn't know much about biofilm and definitely learned more about them here.
thanks again.

Carol,

Thanks for your thoughts. What you say makes a great deal of sense to me. I do know someone who put her AS son on a GF/CF diet, and he was a "different kid" within a few days. He was still a child with autism, as you point out - but life was easier for him and the whole family.
