Don't do what I did

Post by garina »

I have been buying Wolfgang Puck organic soups at WalMart and on the front of the cans, it states GF, so I bought one of each. Easy enough.

Every one was GF, except one, and I didn't notice it until I got home. The Hearty Garden Vegetable has barley in it. Who knew! I read every other can except that one!

Even a line of total organic GF anything cannot be assumed. Big mistake on my part.

I will be reading all ingredients with no assumptions in the future. So easy to make a mistake.

Hi Garina,

I've done the same thing.

The reason why it's so easy to make that mistake is because the good old FDA, as directed by our illustrious congress, in their infinite wisdom, decided that what we don't know about barley, rye, oats, etc., won't hurt us.
On January 1, 2006, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) became effective. This law requires manufacturers to clearly identify on their food labels if a food product has any ingredients that contain protein derived from any of the eight major allergenic foods and food groups: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, or soybeans. These eight foods and food groups account for 90 percent of all food allergies. Other allergenic foods (e.g., sesame) are not required to be declared in accordance with FALCPA.

As the old country/western song goes, "May the bird of paradise fly up their nose, may an elephant caress them with his toes".

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tex,

You make me laugh ... I love your country/western song.

I really am going to be on my guard when buying any food, even if I'm "sure" it's GF!

The other problem is when they change ingredients without any warning. I used to buy Sesame rice crackers and one day I noticed that they had added soy to the ingredients.
