Gloria,

Wonderful to hear about such a caring PCP. And having seen shingles and the effect on people, I can understand your desire for the vaccine - and your relief to have it behind you.

I'll be interested to learn your thinking about the flu vaccine, and your eventual decision. I respect your thinking - and your PCP's approach! - so I am sure whatever you decide, it will be worth learning about, for others here and for me.

shingles revisited: It took about 3 weeks to completely get over it, but do feel that I had a mild case even though I was uncomfortable. Seems like half the people I talked to have had it, and many had the shot long before getting shingles. Some unvaccinated friends said they were so uncomfortable that they couldn't even have a sheet on them. (Brrr!) So based on this, I do think that getting a shot is a good idea, seems to lessen the severity, and of course reduces chances of getting it in the first place.

Gloria, glad you were able to get the shot, gives a person at least some peace of mind.

Regards to all, Beverly

An update:

DH and I went to the doctor today for DH's checkup. We asked about DH getting the shingles vaccine in a couple of weeks (after the required 4 weeks since his flu shot). The doctor said he can't get the shingles vaccine anymore. He was only able to get the one vial for my vaccine. He thinks that the drug stores and grocery stores have hoarded it. He also said it took his office about 2 man-hours to order my vaccine. And then it was backordered.

I feel very lucky to have gotten the vaccine, but now we have to decide whether we should spend the $200+ for DH to get it. Or take a chance that Medicare will cover it in 6 months when DH retires.
