Is there a danger of too much flax?

Post by Deb »

I mentioned on a previous post that I'm making crackers consisting of nothing but toasted golden flax seed and water with seasoning. I am probably consuming 1/4 c. of the seeds per day but many are going through undigested. Recommended amounts I've seen are 1-2 tbsp daily. Any thoughts on this?

Well, if they're passing through you undigested, then they aren't either helping or hurting you... You might crush them a little, maybe with a mortar & pestle, so they're more likely to break down with chewing.

How do you feel? If you feel well and have no symptoms, they must at least not be slowing down your healing...

I have a horrible time with flax seeds. They ALL go through undigested, and leave an angry colon in their wake. I used to eat Mary's Gone Crackers, seed-based crackers, but not anymore!! Someone told me whole flax seeds are undigestible for everyone, not just people with IBDs, and flax should only be eaten ground up.

I agree with Zizzle, the hulls are pretty much indigestible, but the problem with grinding them is that ground flax seed hulls make a pretty good laxative. Have you ever noticed that most of the people recommending colon-cleansing products, and high-fiber products designed to "keep the GI tract healthy", seem to think that we should pay our dues to the throne at least 3 times every day? Call me old-fashioned, but I consider a routine of that sort to be waaaaaaaaaaaay short of optimal.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Gee, if three times a day is considered optimal, then I'm doing pretty well.

I remember listening to a speaker once (with some product to sell) that said it was "ideal" to go after every meal, like a baby does. I remember thinking........................................................whatever! :)

Thanks for your replies above. I was pretty vague in my question. My digestive system seems to be handling the crackers/fiber just fine. I'm really just looking for a vehicle to apply toppings (love my almond butter) to that is low carb. I've read about a hormonal-like effect from flax and am wondering if anyone has any information about that.

once I was told 4/5 times a day U should poop!!!!!!

I am happy to coax Norman out 1 day a day~~~~~~but I know that the mending of L1--has been my plugging up issue---
Every so often I do need help in coaxing Norman out--so I suck on cough drops that contain *sorbitol* and that does the trick==
