the local newspaper

Post by harma »

Today, while I was waiting for a friend to finish her fitness exercise in the gym, I had a decaf espresso and read the local news paper (an English version of course). Two interesting things.

One was a background article/comment on nobelprize winners for science. It was all about the great scientists that win nobelprizes for their new insights, new theories that go against the standard vision on things. Inventions that turn the world of the mainstream scientist upside down. It was describing many examples how all those great creative people first became outcast, sometimes almost a paria, how they were worked against, fired etc. One example was about two scientist who figured out that a stomach ulcer had nothing to do with too much acid production in the stomach but with the helio something bacteria. Even more interesting was that they were critized and questioned because of the billion industry of classic medication against stomach ulcers. Also interesting was a quote that science and religion are very close to each other. Once they (the establishment) has adopted something as THE TRUTH, the way we do things, the way they are than that is THE TRUTH. Of course I had to think about Dr Fine and his vision on gluten intolerance and he has become a bit of an outcast with his gluten intolerance. It is sad it is this way, but reading this article made me realize it's a mechanism of mankind. And also with the gluten, it's only a matter of time that the general view on it will change.

Another interesting thing was in human interest page, an advice on what kind of pasta to eat when you can't stand wheat because of gluten (I thought WOW, they know the word gluten), the article was not real exciting just some advice on rice noodles and some other types of noodles. But that it not the point, that the word GLUTEN was in there.

Harma,

Very interesting post. I've always found it extremely interesting that so many of us here are so good at recognizing the truth, despite the fact that in some situations, the establishment does everything in it's power to hide the real truth, and to claim that what is false is true, (and vice versa). It is almost as if we are able to see things that most people in the world cannot see, or else they don't want to see it, because that would "rock the boat". (This kind of reminds me of George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four).

I believe that rather than being born with this ability, we have learned it, and I suspect that MC is the primary reason why we have gained this gift that prompts us to always look deeper into any situation, than meets the eye. Having to discover our own way to control our symptoms of a disease that the medical community poorly understands, seems to open our eyes to many things that we never noticed, before, and as a result, we tend to become seekers of the truth, in other aspects of our life.

In a way, we have many of the qualities of those Nobel prize winners, because we have to put up with being ridiculed by our GI doc and other "experts", and taunted by our friends and family, for being so "peculiar" about our diet, and when we point out to some of them that they would probably benefit from changing their own diet, of course, they can't understand that, so they don't believe us. But we persevere anyway, and we do what we have to do, to embrace the truth.

IMO, this is definitely one of the "silver linings" that comes with MC - unfortunately, they don't give any Nobel prizes for having MC.

Thanks for an inspiring post, I always enjoy your insight. Have you ever noticed that you are very good at seeing things that most of the people around you never notice?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I have done a couple of separate modules of an open university course, cultural science, about history of western europe from 1400 until about 1900. As we all know, thanks to many scientific researchers our view on the world has changed enormously. What all those (what we consider now) great scientist had in common, is that almost all they were denounced, because their view did not fit in within the view of the establishment (at that time the catholic church), people like Galileo, Copernicus, Darwin. With their view they really turned the world upside down, and people really had to get used to a new concept of looking to reality. Those people were the real pioneers of this world and I think every time has his own pioneers.

And that is so funny about studying history (some people always question what is the use of it), that (at least I do) you see mechanism of people in general and institutes that control the power, that are very similar through time. Of course, nowadays people are not burned anymore on a pyre. But there are other tools now, to shut those rebels up that go against the establishment. Don't publish their articles, no more funding for their research, not being invited anymore for important congresses etc.

But the good news is, almost always in the end, all the new ideas get accepted and than all the followers say "yes yes I have always said this, supported him/her, from the beginning I thought he was right" Bullshit of course, it are those going with the save mass.

I also think that there is nothing wrong with criticizing any new revolutionary development, question it, look it at from different angles. That is one of the most important tasks of science (IMO). That is another thing I have learned from my social science study. The idea is quite often that only one person invented something or came up with a great idea. But even with Darwin there were others before him experimenting with similar ideas and concepts. That's really another interesting to see, how someone starts with a crazy idea/concept and is seeing the light but not very clear yet, number two takes over and adds his knowledge and ideas and gradually it develops into something that makes sense. But also things as steam engines, light bulb, telephone etc were not invented by one person. Yes maybe one person came up with the final concept of idea, but he/she could only do it because of the knowledge, inventions, theories, vies etc of people before him.

Actually the current scientific world should embrace those people with revolutionary ideas and treasure them, but also challenge them, work with them.
