Pill Bottle Seal

Post by garina »

I know this is probably a silly question, but is the round paper seal on a new bottle of pills that you buy OTC sealed with glue, melted wax, or ??? I don't know about wax, but the glue could be a problem, I think. Or not ...
I don't know. Couldn't each pill you take out be cross-contaminated if that sealant is on the Unsafe list?

Anyone know? I know, it does sound silly.

That's definitely not a silly question. I could be wrong, but judging by the wide differences in the adhesive qualities of those seals, I have a hunch that a variety of adhesives, and/or sealing methods are used. Some of them are so tough that I wonder if the plastic liner of the seal is attached by thermal welding, rather than by an adhesive. It wouldn't surprise me at all, if some seals are attached with a gluten-based adhesive, but I'm just guessing. I could be all wet.

Tex,

I really do wonder, because I've been in a D flare for several days now, and I'm trying to think what I've done to cause it.

I also just got back from the dentist for a 6 month cleaning, and now I'm wondering if the cleaning solution they use is on the Safe list. So many things are just a guess without a place to go for answers. Had I asked the dental hygienist, I might have gotten "the stare". I sometimes get that in restaurants when I ask for a GF menu.

Garina,

I think you've figured out the source of your flare:
Through my wife’s experience with celiac disease, I discovered, quite accidentally, that routine dental cleaning may expose patients to gluten. My wife’s celiac symptoms would return every time her teeth were cleaned. It took a while to find the source of her reaction but after we did, I was able to confirm that most polishing agents, including the brand I used in my office, contain gluten. My office has used only gluten-free polishing paste ever since.

Garina, I just got my teeth cleaned yesterday and mentioned that I was gluten-free.
The hygienist said they previously had a product that contained gluten but they were now gluten-free.
That could be a likely source.

Interesting - I had a dental cleaning last week, and it wasn't until she started polishing my teeth that I thought of this. (I behaved pretty nicely, but I didn't have much choice, given the equipment and goo in my mouth.)

It was creepily chocolate flavored (that should be a good thing, right?), and I jumped up and spat and rinsed before the hygienist was quite expecting it. I think I'm OK, but will definitely ask about this, next time I schedule an appointment.

Garina, hope you're feeling better,

Sara

Thanks Tex, Deb, and Sara,

Yes, I think that must be it. I will call them and ask. If they don't know, then I will have to change dentists. It's that important to me.

Oh, Sara, I thought the mint was awful tasting, but can't imagine how the chocolate would taste as a whitening agent. Sure wish things were more simple.
