Ordered my Enterolab tests today!

Post by draperygoddess »

finally got the go-ahead from my husband to order my Enterolab tests! I'm doing Panel B (big 4 plus genetic tests). I will be sure to post results as soon as I get them!

(Why am I so excited to play in poop?? )

Ooh, I'm excited. With the genetics, we'll soon have fresh evidence that we might be long-lost cousins!

I'm really delighted for you - so glad you have your husband's support in this, too.

Cynthia, there is something very satisfying in finding out "IN PRINT" what we've been suspecting. It also makes it
easier to make believers of those around us.

Well said, Deb.

I was astonished by my Enterolab results, though I "knew" almost all of what I found out. And a friend was inspired by my experience to have 2 of her kids tested. Although we really knew... which is why she did these tests in the first place... she, their father, and I were all absolutely blown away by their tests, too. I think one amazing thing is... why on earth aren't more practitioners looking for this, whenever they see a long list of issues (skin, mood/behavior, thyroid, migraines, pain...)

It is amazing to see, in black and white, that we are *not* making this up; we are *not* jumping on some fad diet; we are *not* supposed to be feeling this way. And of course, as Deb says... very satisfying if we're ever faced with doubters!

BTW - I'll bet most of us have already been sufficiently "grossed out" by some aspect of living with MC, so the Enterolab test kid is pretty much a walk in the park (and much more user-friendly than other stool sample kits I've seen).

I now believe that many people who will never be diagnosed with an AI condition of any kind, much less celiac or non-celiac gluten sensitivity... may have a limited tolerance for gluten, which could break at any point in their lives. I am not sure there are a lot of humans out there who can eat gluten at every meal, for all their lives, with impunity, no matter what bug may infest them, what medication may throw them off, what else may happen in their lives and bodies. My neighbor was telling me the other day that after his big experiment with super-low carb, no-grain weight loss (amazing!), he indulged in a week of the G stuff (and much else) through a family wedding, etc. He felt absolutely horrible... and his next sentence was, "but I don't have a problem with any food." His skin was blotchy and peeling - and hasn't been, since I knew him. We might think he's lucky not to be handcuffed to the toilet, but actually - we are the lucky ones. At least we know. He's been afflicted with all kinds of amorphous stuff, for years.

Oops. I got sidetracked (my favorite symptom). Back to cheering for speedy test results for my 'cousin'!

I am torn between being excited to see some confirmation, and scared that all the tests will come back negative! So far, I have had to rely totally on my own assessment, because my GI insists that inflammation and edema in the colon are "normal," and all my blood tests were negative as well. Logically, I know I have some food intolerances, but there's that nagging thought in the back of my mind...

Oh, and having the hard evidence that I'm not on some crazy fad diet? That's a biggie, too. I still remember my mother's disparaging remarks about my aunt, who had food issues and took about 20 minutes to order a meal. I don't want people to think of me that way!

Cynthia,

This is a great point - I so don't want to be that 'special request' person in a restaurant (or worse, at someone's home). It was a big mental shift to put my "preferences" above the potential embarrassment or sense that I'm inconveniencing someone with my questions. But these aren't preferences like chocolate or vanilla - this is my health. (Someone said to me recently that I was more 'relaxed' than a celiac friend she had dined out with, and I took this as an important indicator that I was not being clear enough with the waiter!)

My husband is a very robust, food-loving guy - I said recently that I don't think he would have been drawn to me, if I had all the food issues I have now! He disagreed, because he sees a real difference between 'being finicky' and MC (of course! - but would he have seen that early on?). We've dined out with folks who have a loooong list of foods they don't like, and it always makes him uneasy when someone can name more than 7 vegetables they will not eat (especially if his beloved asparagus and broccoli raab are on the list)

You must be looking at your aunt's food issues with a fresh perspective.

I don't think you will be sorry. I put off doing the tests because I was afraid I'd be positive to EVERYTHING. Turned out just gluten and soy. I felt quite fortunate. I hope it turns out well for you. Even if it confirms more problem areas, at least you will know.

Despite my misgivings about the testing, days like today convince me that I really NEED to get this done. I am practically doubled over this morning and have no earthly idea what's causing it. I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary yesterday. I had some stir-fry at lunch, which I fix myself and have never had a problem with before, and a baked potato last night. I was a little bloated yesterday afternoon, which I attributed to the broccoli (it always makes me gassy), then gurgly last night, but nothing else. So now I'm wondering if I have another intolerance rearing its head, since I didn't eat anything yesterday that would normally bother me. Oh, Sara, if I lose potatoes...that will be rather like your eggs!

Shirley, you're right--at least I will KNOW.

Cynthia,
Did you stir-fry contain GF soy sauce by chance? What did you season it with?

I am sort of sorry about having done the in depth one because I found out I AM sensitive to everything! But I truly understand the need to do it. I know I should wait to do MRT until this flare recedes, if not goes away.
Cynthia, I truly hope you don't have to give up potatoes. You can eat others starches, can't you? You seem to have very few sensitivities so far.

About 16 years ago I was with friends at a restaurant (they were trying to hook me up), and my friend was trying to figure out what she could eat, having decided she was gluten sensitive. It was way before the so called "fashion" of gluten free knowledge and products. Her hubby was super impatient with her while she was investigating.
After about 10 years he was having issues so he decided to join her. He lost tons of weight, and his digestion improved 100%. Needless to say he's a convert.

Strange! I felt better (though was having mucous-y BMs, not full blown D alternating with C) when I was eating more, as long as I was avoiding gluten.
I actually felt better when I was juicing, as long as I was juicing milder F&V (apples, carrots, pears, spinach. The nutrients in the juice without the fiber seemed to have helped somehow.

Zizzle--no soy sauce, just a bit of EVO and a GF/SF spice blend, rice, chicken, broccoli, bell pepper, carrots and sugar snap peas. I've fixed it before several times and never had an issue.

Lesley--so far, the only ones I know of are gluten, lactose and casein, but I feel certain I'm still missing a piece of the puzzle. This is the worst day I've had since i stopped the Zoloft without knowing what triggered it. If the Enterolab tests don't clarify anything, I'm not sure what the next step will be. I've been avoiding soy lately because I thought that might be it, but that hasn't solved the mystery. My suspects are soy, oil (I seem to be fine with EVO and canola), food coloring, and, now, potatoes. At what point do I decide it's just something I can't predict?

Ate a little rice at lunchtime, and the stomach cramps started as soon as I started eating, but no BM. Taking it easy for the rest of the day.
