GF bread that actually tastes like...bread!

Post by draperygoddess »

I found some GF/LF rolls at, of all places, Wal-Mart. They are actually very good--not quite the same as a good yeast roll, but very soft and not dry. The brand was Schar. Don't know if I'll ever find them again, but I did enjoy the one I ate! They do have yeast, but if you can tolerate it, these are worth a try.

Morning Cynthia,

A number of stores handle Schar and they are good products but most rolls also need to be baked for a couple of minutes since they are not fully baked. Udi's makes a superior product as well as Against the Grain if ou can find them in your stores.

Maggie,

thanks! I have seen some Udi's in my stores, but not rolls. I will keep an eye out...

Cynthia/Maggie,

My son (who is also gluten free) just told me that Udi's now makes gluten free hot dog buns that double as sandwich rolls (he claims they are the best he has had). I will be looking for them in the market.

Love,
Kari

I can't eat Schar products because most contain soy flour or soy protein. Sigh. I also don't like that corn starch is one of the main ingredients. I hear they make a great Panko-style breadcrumb.

I've given up on most GF bread brands because of soy and dairy ingredients. I think tapioca flour in large quantities is not my friend either. So it's only reliable ol' Udi's for me.

I had a depressing supermarket trip the other day. I finally decided to splurge on some GF/DF "treats", only to discover most had soy. Even So Delicious GF/DF ice cream was soymilk based! So it was back to sorbet for me. I did splurge on some Amy's frozen GF/DF TV dinners for work. There's only so many leftovers I can haul to the office each day. And going out for lunch is simply too dangerous and depressing.

I'm looking to the holidays with sheer dread. I was hopeful that things would be safe now that my MIL is gluten free. She had me so excited to try her delicious King Arthur bread and GF meatballs. Then I discovered they contain butter or cheese...

If I can survive Thanksgiving weekend without shedding tears, it'll be a success.

Udi's also makes hamburger rolls and they really are the best.

Zizzle - they do not have any soy in their buns or dairy. They do have eggs but eggs are not considered dairy.

I can't have eggs, soy, dairy OR rice. All the gluten free products contain at least one of those.
This is really depressing. I am SO sick of meat and potatoes, but a little change and I am back on the potty!

Zizzle - I so understand you. I think my list is even longer than yours. I SO miss ice cream. But even more I miss eggs, cheese, yogurt.

Z, the So Delicious coconut line doesn't contain soy - if you've found a place that already carries that brand, you should demand the coconut varieties!

I've had exactly one (very good) GF English muffin since I started down this path. It took a while how to eat without bread, rolls, or muffins, but I'm there now. My grandmother "could not eat" without bread (pita - she was born in Beirut). (Hmmm, addicted?) I just hate thinking of my food as 'ingredients'!

I am thinking of inventing some sort of spoon-bread-ish corn dish for Thanksgiving, *F.... will advise if we ever achieve liftoff,

S,
I have the So Delecious Coconut Ice Cream. I love it. I just assumed all their stuff would be coconut based, and that Safeway might carry it. Oh well.

Yeah, it sure would be nice to shop at Safeway, instead of Whole Paycheck!

Sara, I came across a sweet potato spoonbread recipe the other day that I thought I could tweak--if I find it again I'll post it! also, found a cornbread dressing recipe that was GF, so I'm thinking of trying that one. My dear MIL is trying to revamp the entire Thanksgiving menu just for me, and I refuse to let her do it. There is no reason for 18 people to change their tradition just because I can't eat all of it.

Cynthia,

I'm taking the opposite tack - but then again, I'm hosting, and several of my guests have similar food issues - so everything will be GF, DF, SF, etc.F! But I totally agree, I wouldn't expect someone to change their own home and kitchen around for one guest. If that were me, I'd make sure there were good choices for someone with an intolerance (they way I always did for a friend with a severe nut allergy), but not expect everyone else to play along.

What a nice MIL you have!

Let me know if you find the spoonbread recipe, or the dressing - sweet-potato spoonbread sounds great.

Cynthia, I agree...what a great mother-in-law. I am hosting Thanksgiving (pretty normal) and still cook some
gluten foods for others (I think there would be a minor revolt if there weren't Grandma Clara's finger rolls.) I admit
I'm getting more nervous about it but seem to manage without major problems....though my KitchenAid gets a thorough scrubbing afterward. I'm also planning to do our annual gingerbread houses with my grands. We'll see!
