Fennel vs flax for GERD

Flax - makes an awesome hair gel but is not good for GERD.

Fennel, OTOH, DOES help the GERD. For which I am very grateful.

Any ideas about what I can eat? What forms of food (involving meat and potatoes) can I make. I am a very good cook. I can take a challenge. Just try me. I made a very rich and delicious consomme (took me 2 days) to use as a base for meat dishes. I cooked lamb and potatoes in it. My some polished it off. The broth is even better for the cooking of the lamb and veggies in it. I did NOT eat the veggies, except for the potatoes.

Oh, the things one can do with potatoes! I remember a tour driver in Hawaii asking us passengers what we thought of poi. We all said, um, it's OK, trying to be polite. Then he said, well, we have our poi and you have your potatoes! I thought about it and realized he was right. A plain potato is pretty boring, but who eats a plain potato? We dress it up, fry it, boil it, grind it into flour and bake it, and it becomes delicious.

I know that you're sick to death of potatoes, Lesley, and who can blame you. Wouldn't it be great if we could trade my corn for your potatoes for a while?

Here's what I used to do with potatoes:

Fried them sliced in olive oil.
Potato pancakes - I think you know about potato latkes.
Potato salad.
Baked, boiled and mashed potatoes, of course.
Boiled new potatoes with parsley and or ghee
French fries, of course (I believe Alexia makes GF French fries).
Tater tots (Look in the GF section. I can't remember the name. McCain?
Buy Potatoes O'Brien, Ore-Ida's are GF, I recall. Fry them with ham, bacon, pork or turkey sausage for breakfast.
Potato starch and potato flour can be used for a starch in many GF recipes.

Oh Gloria I do know how to cook potatoes, and have been eating every kind in every way possible. Potato latkes have egg and onion. I haven't tried onion yet, but I can't have egg.

I WISH I could have them with pork products, but I can't have pork!

I need to try ghee. I haven't eaten butter for a long time, but every now and again I used it for cooking. Since I now can't have it I need to make ghee. I have given up on Indian food since I can't have rice, and I haven't tried many spices yet.

Try this, it should allow you to find recipes for just about anything, to meet your ingredient specifications. You may need to juggle the ingredients you list, in order to find matches, but with a little trial and error, you should be able to strike pay dirt:

I would put ghee pretty low on your list - this is just my opinion, but I'm feeling risk averse on your behalf :grin: (And thank you for your kind words on that other thread - I am feeling much better, thanks!)

Tex, I had forgotten about that swell recipe resource! I was going to do something novel for Thanksgiving, and that would have been a great way to figure it out... however, I have forgotten what it was (and this is probably for the best, since I have more food ideas than time to enact them in the next week!)... As my fellow Red Sox fans say... there's always next year.

WOW!!

That is one heck of a resource. Tex, you are a treasure!

I have not tried to eat onions yet, although I LOVE them. Especially roasted with meat (chicken is my favorite, and next comes roast beef, both off the menu - a sad smiley goes here). What is the experience of board members re: onions?

I don't have the terrible D, and am heading into C territory, but my abdomen feels "heavy". I don't know how else to describe it. You know the ad of the woman with COPD who has an elephant sitting on her chest? Kind of like that. I don't know whether that means I am still in a flare, or in a healing process. I am still too new to this.

Sara: I am spending way too much time in the kitchen. I am not trying Ghee just yet, though I will think of it as something to look forward to.

I believe that most of us had to avoid onions while recovering - I know I did, anyway, and I've seen where many others mentioned the same problem. They didn't bother me, after I was in remission.

I was able to make potato pancakes without onions and without eggs by using potato flour (not starch) as my egg substitute.

I know you can't eat pork; that's why I mentioned turkey sausage.

Gloria - Not because I am Jewish. Because it's on my sensitivity list. I actually LOVE bacon.

I need to find turkey sausage with nothing in it I can't eat.

I SO want to be in remission. I keep pushing it, and KNOWING I am doing wrong.

I will have to be good. MC is telling me.

No, I knew that pork was on your intolerant list.

You can make your own turkey sausage. I do it all the time. I use a recipe with very simple ingredients. There are many on the Internet, and I believe that Dee has a recipe in Dee's Kitchen.

Also, Whole Foods sells turkey sausage patties with just a few herbs and spices added.

Yes, remission is the goal of all of us. You probably need to take a deep breath and realize that this is not a quick road that you're on. For a lucky few, eliminating gluten, casien and soy brings remission. For most others, it takes months - for me and a few others, years. The key is to learn patience. I've decided that one of the reasons I've been given this trial is to learn to be patient.

Can you eat WF turkey? I thought you had to use specific types?

Given my food sensitivities, and my personality I think I am in your camp, rather than that of the lucky few.

Yes, I can eat Whole Foods turkey. I think you can generally trust their meats and poultry to be free of most additives.

Hi Leslie,

I am new, but I have had major C in the past, and had it for a few weeks before this recent round of D started - it was caused this last time from painkillers after an outpatient surgery. I have had it before a few times too, most notably after my kids were born. I would actually rather have the empty feeling following elimination than that heavy feeling as the C builds up. I haven't had to deal with that lately, since I took a total nose-dive into the chronic D, for 'Lo these many months (I just realized it is more than 6 - more like 9 and counting!) now but I wanted to let you know I can relate and those heavy, full feelings are not fun. :(

...and of course our families wonder why we would have a problem with C when our symptoms are usually D? - how frustrating!! I have no idea how I will get this concept across to my family. the next time it happens to me, now that I have the official collagenous colitis diagnosis.

I hope you feel better soon!

Gloria - I am glad you can eat their meats. I have only been buying there since this started. Trying to keep things as pure as possible.

Robin - Thank you. Not that I wish this on you, or anyone for that matter, but it does help when someone understands.
