Glutened!

Post by karenswans »

I got glutened today. I was at a restaurant with a friend. She had fish and chips and offered me some fries off of her plate. I ate a few, and suddenly realized I had eaten a piece of the crust from her fish instead of a fry. Now I'm waiting to see what happens. This is the first time since September that I know I had gluten. It's been about 2 hours and so far I've had no reaction. So I'm just..waiting. :???:

Bummer, Karen! My typical reaction time is "the next morning" to something like this (small/inadvertent amount). Sometimes there will be bloating or gurgling the night before. This seems to be pretty individual, with some folks reacting much faster and some a lot later (though I think that's rarer).

Fingers crossed for you,

Sara

Those fries may have been contaminated also, because most restaurants don't use dedicated fryers, so all of the oil usually contains gluten, unless the taters were fried in fresh oil, (which is very unlikely).

Good luck. Maybe you have a high enough trigger threshold to withstand it successfully.

There is a restaurant in my area where they cook the fries (not packaged, but freshly cut) separately in either soybean oil or canola oil.

Hopefully, you didn't have enough for it to bother you. Think positive.

I asked about the oil for the fries because I was worried about soybean oil. It didn't occur to me that there may be cross-contamination.

Anyway, I didn't have a reaction. Maybe I was under the threshold, like Tex said, or maybe that fish coating was corn meal. I didn't ask about that because I didn't intend to eat any! I'm just glad it didn't cause me problems, because I've been doing well and I'd like to continue to do so.
