had dinner out: grilled chicken, french fries and diet coke

Post by harma »

Today was my third time in Jordan to eat outside (yes yes we are making progress, the third time in whole year   )

It was buffalo chicken or something like it, a fast food chicken thing. I just had plane grilled chicken breast and some french fries. The revolutionary thing today was diet coke. For a moment I thought I shouldn't it be great if I could just eat anything I wanted to eat. I was careful with the food and normally I do no soda's and cola. But so fed up with always water, tea or a clear juice. So my out of the ordinary today was a diet coke. Everything in the coke is probably bad for me, including the artificial sweetener, but sometimes I just want to be "normal"!!!!

I never liked French fries (apparently there's something wrong with me BESIDES the gluten/celiac/MC-CC...) - but I do eat them now! It has reconnected me with my fellow humans, and is about the only snack I have in common with some of my dining companions (the bread/cheese/crackers/etc. people)!

Some commercial french fries - at least in the US - are dusted with flour to keep them from sticking.

Robin and Sheila, in the early stages you might want to start with small portions of oily/fried/etc. things. And the pace of healing, and which things we can increase sooner, seems to be very individual. But do know, there are french fries in your future!

Robin, the good news is - the better french fries are more likely to be GF. Restaurants that buy giant packages frozen (in other words, can't be bothered to cut up a potato) don't make the best fries...

If the peels are on, and they're not all perfectly sized/shaped, you know that someone actually made those french fries and they are more likely to be OK. (If the restaurant fries a lot of battered foods, you still have to have a little waiter chat... sigh...)

I'm not a deep-fryer (because I'm not a good cleaner-upper!), but you know for sure if you make 'em yourself...

Have a great trip, and bon appetit!

A few brands of frozen French fries, (I believe Ore-Ida is one), are GF, but as Sara mentioned, many are not. The main risk in restaurants, of course is the oil in which the French fries are cooked. Most restaurants use the same oil to cook breaded items, and French fries, which contaminates the French fries with gluten. Even the few restaurants that use dedicated fryers can't always be trusted, because of accidents, and because of someone using the wrong fryer in a pinch, during rush hour, etc. Once the oil is contaminated with gluten, it remains contaminated, until it's time for replacement.

Homemade French fries are safe, though, (as long as you use uncontaminated oil, or bake or broil them). As long as you don't overdo it, right off the bat, you should be able to handle a few French fries, now and then, (it's worth a try, anyway).

Love,

Thanks Guys!

I would only make my own french fries. I have to many problems to worry about store bought ones. I was also born in Massachusetts and there we ate our french fries with vinegar and black pepper. Can I have them that way?

You Guys Are The BEST!!!

Robin,

FYI, Chick-fil-a waffle fries are GF and fried separately in dedicated fryers. They have been my one concession to junk food! (Unfortunately, evidence is now stacking up that I may be sensitive to potatoes, so they too must go...)

Sure - we don't mind.

Seriously, I see no reason why you can't. Black pepper bothered my stomach while I was recovering, so I avoided it, but that was probably just me.

OK, I've never heard of seasoning French fries with vinegar and black pepper - down here in Tejas we're more likely to eat 'em with jalapeños. Do you just sprinkle some vinegar on them, or dip 'em, or what?

Bon appétit.

Love,
Tex

Sprinkle malt vinegar on nice, fat crispy fries. Not the McDonald's wimpy ones. It's delicious!

Lesley,

Yep, malted barley adds flavor, that's why it's added to so many products, such as breakfast cereals. If I recall correctly, malt vinegar is made by fermentation, not by distillation, and since it contains malted barley, it won't be GF. I checked the Heinz site, (since they have a lot of GF foods). Sure enough:
Safe Food Groups

Fruits and vegetables (in their natural state, fresh, canned or frozen), fruit juices Meat, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes (in their natural state), nut butters Milk, most plain or fruit yogurt (with no granola), cheese, ice cream/puddings with no cookies or brownies Fats: oils, butter, margarine, mayonnaise

Packaged Foods: Look for “Gluten-Free” next to or below the ingredient list ners, pure chocolate, vinegar (except malt vinegar), spices, olives, pickles, plain mustard, ketchup, jam, jelly, syrup, coffee, tea, fruit drinks, soda, iced tea, alcohol (except regular beer*)
http://www.heinz.com/glutenfree/faq.html

It won't have a high gluten content, but malt vinegar is not gluten-free.

What a pity! That's the Brit way to eat potato chips, as they are called in England.

Howdy Tex,

I just sprinkle plain old white vinegar and a dusting of black pepper! Yummmmmmmmmmmmmy  I cant believe in Texas you put jalapenos that would kill my stomach! Oh heaven I cant wait to get home from vacation to try french fries!!!

Is there any other foods that you guys are not sharing?

I have a question....Can we have buffalo cheese, goat cheese and tapioca? I have been dairy free for many years but sometimes I enjoyed buffalo or goat cheese and I don't think they bothered me. I have been wondering if tapioca is a GF product. When my kids were little I use to make tapioca pudding with a warm peach sauce, they loved it and I remember it is dairy free.

Love
