Flying the Friendly Skies
What do all the people with MC do when they have to fly for business or pleasure and leave the safety of their kitchen? The airlines won't let you on with food, will they? My daughter is an International Latin ballroom dancer, and is going to Vegas for a competition in two weeks. I just missed going with her last week to Ohio Star because I was afraid of the diarrhea and finding/eating the right kind of food. But since Vegas is just a 40 minute flight, I am determined to go! So, experienced flyers, what are your tricks/suggestions for eating/taking the right kinds of food when you are away from home?

Travel with MC is quite doable and you can take foods with you, just not liquids over 3 ounces. I recommend looking in this section:

In the past year I've made 2 trips to Australia from NH and Gabes made a trip from Australia to France. Others have also posted there tips and tricks there.

Hi Mandy,
I am leaving on Friday for a much needed vacation. I have a doctors note, TSA report (stating there is NO restrictions bring your own food on board) and I also called the airline and spoke with them regarding my situation. So I should have no problem with flying. I got all my information from the GREAT people on this web site!!
In May, my youngest son graduated with his Master Degree and had to fly to Florida. Back then I wasn't diagnosis yet with MC but I knew certain foods made my problems even worse. So I packed a few things and when I got to the security point they confiscated EVERYTHING! I don't know why and the people here couldn't figure it out either. If you look up the airline you will be flying and search for TSA regulations it clearly states that you CAN bring your own food as long it is not opened, it must be securely wrapped.
You have to purchase only liquids after the security point. It mad my trip a horror. I almost didn't make seeing my son graduate.
This time I am ready to travel and I am armed with all the necessary documentations I need for a safe and happy trip. I cant wait to go away. This as been a very long year for me with being Dx with MC, UC and Diverticulitis. I am no where near remission however I am feeling better than I did 6 months ago. Like the new tag states "We can get our life back" and I am on my way of doing just that. I would not be able to do or be where I am today if it wasn't for the GREAT people on this forum. I will give MUCH thanks this year for all of them who have helped me over come all the obstacles that stood in my way of having a "normal" life. I feel truly blessed.
So I am telling you dent stay home in your securely environment! Go watch and enjoy the time with your daughter. Life is to short not to. Book plane reservation, pack your food and GO!
Happy Thanksgiving

Mandy,
Pack a food suitcase and bring it on the plane. They don't even open mine anymore. I believe I posted the items I pack in the link that Joe posted above, though my list has changed considerably since then.
Since I travel frequently to visit my daughter in Utah, I've printed a list of the items I need to pack. I insert the list in a plastic sleeve and use an erasable marker to check off the items as they're packed. The list is separated into: food suitcase items, carry-on items, items to purchase upon arrival, and lunch box items. I begin baking and freezing things (waffles, muffins, tortillas, etc.) the week before I travel. The day before I leave, I only need to worry about packing the items on my list and checking them off. It's much less stressful, and I usually don't forget anything.
Many hotel rooms have a microwave and a small refrigerator, so you'll be able to heat your own meals. Make sure your room has them before you book. Whether you can eat out depends upon what your intolerances are. One of the fun things about Vegas is all of the cheap and bountiful buffets there. I used to love going there for that reason alone. It's different with MC, of course.
I hope you can go to Vegas and have a great time!

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Thanks, guys, for all the great tips! I am only staying for two days, maybe less depending on flight times. Believe it or not, most Vegas hotel rooms don't have microwaves so I won't be heating/cooking anything. I know I will be able to find something GF to eat at the restaurants, I was just looking for snack items that don't require any refrigeration. 75% of the time I am there, I am in the ballroom, watching and helping my daughter. Now, with your suggestions, I think it will be doable!
