Compounding

Post by Beth »

Hi there,

I'm sorry, but I can' find this information anywhere, even though I think it's already been posted. I tried to call my compounding pharmacy to have them make me a sensitivity-free Rx of immodium, but they said they need an Rx from my doctor. I tried to have my doctor call one in, but she says she'll only do it if I go in to see her. I have a VERY high deductible plan, so I'm not wasting my time or money going in to see her. Is there a place online I can order compounding prescriptions from overseas so I don't have to deal with the rigamorole here?

And Tex, sorry to ask you this for the millionth time, but how long did it take you to start seeing Norman when you were eating just chicken and potatoes? I'm back into major D again and am getting discouraged.

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

Well, you can get generic loperamide from the same place where most members order Entocort, but I have no idea what the other ingredients are:

https://www.alldaychemist.com/596-lopamide-2mg.html

The original version of Imodium AD is back on the shelves in many cities, and it's safe for most of us. Besides 2mg of loperamide, it contains colloidal silicon dioxide, dibasic calcium phosphate, D&C yellow #10 aluminum lake, FD&C blue #1 aluminum lake, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose.

The liquid version contains a bunch of undesirable ingredients, though, such as citric acid, sucralose, xanthan gum, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having symptoms again - that's a heck of a note. As far as my response to the diet is concerned, back in those days, I didn't really know how to go about it, so I was on a GF diet for a year and a half, constantly experimenting with temporarily avoiding various foods, and keeping a food diary, when it finally dawned on me that what I needed to do was to just cut out everything that seemed suspicious. After I took that drastic step, within a couple of weeks, I was in remission. During that initial year and a half, I never experimented with gluten, though - once I cut it out, I never touched it again, so maybe my small intestine had at least done some healing in that time, and that may be why I responded pretty quickly to cutting out the other foods.

I hope you can start seeing some improvement soon, because yes, unrelenting D can be so very discouraging. It wouldn't be so bad if we had some way to foresee the future, so that we could see how much longer we have to put up with it, but many of us never even get a hint, until one day, Norman arrives, and the world instantly transforms into a brighter, more hospitable place. It's not knowing, that makes the situation seem so hopeless.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks so much for the reply, Tex. I think tomorrow I'll just go out and get some over the counter immodium and see if that helps. Fortunately I'm not back into fire hose D (well, for the most part), but it's bad enough that I'm concerned. I've been on this very strict chicken/potatoes/little bit of applesauce diet for several weeks, and it seemed like it was helping, but now it's getting bad again. I am REALLY trying to avoid medication given my goal to conceive in the coming year. But we'll see . . . I'm thinking acupuncture could help???

At any rate, I appreciate any and all good vibes coming in my direction. It's one thing to be concerned about getting/absorbing the right nutrients for myself - and quite another to be concerned about this for a new little life. But you're right, Tex, only time will tell when Norman will return, and when it does, I'm going to have a party! Of course, I'll serve one of my delicious roast chickens, but still! (I'm getting SO good at cooking chicken, I must say!)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Really, despite this current flare there is so much to be grateful for.
