That leaves those of us who have alternating C and D out in the IBS doghouse.

News articles like this drive me nuts. Just a tantalizing bit of info, without anyway for one to research/review it. And you are right, Lesley. It does leave C and D MC people out in the cold.

"This assessment is a significant step forward, as it correlates a patient's symptoms with the physicians' understanding of the severity of microscopic colitis," Dr. Pardi says. Using the assessment index in future studies, researchers will more easily compare treatments for this condition.

Does anyone see the irony in this statement? Physician's understanding of the severity of MC? I wonder just how many GI's are even going to get a copy or take the time to study it. I'm guessing....none.

Actually,

The Mayo Clinic has begun hedging their bets on MC. Has anyone else noticed this change?
Treatment for collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis often begins with lifestyle changes. In many cases, adjusting your diet will be enough to resolve your symptoms. If not, your doctor can suggest a number of effective medications for collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. In rare cases, surgery is necessary.
That pretty well sums it up - according to them, if diet changes don't work, then try a drug, and if that doesn't bring relief, they'll offer to remove the offending entrails for you.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

It troubles me that they are associating the severity of symptoms with the severity of disease. I hope this doesn't lead to the conclusion that the more severe the symptoms, the more difficult it will be to resolve them or the contrapositive - the milder symptoms will be easier to resolve. Even though my symptoms have been relatively mild (no pain, cramps, headaches), I've had poor success in resolving them with diet, medication, and a combination of both.

The only good thing is that at least they are admitting there is problem about which they know nothing, or very little.
