The most important paper that I have read on LE/LC and it's causation by food allergies was actually written 8 years ago in Japan.
Entitled:Chronic allergy to dietary ovalbumin induces lymphocyte migration to rat small intestinal mucosa that is inhibited by MAdCAM-1 Keio University Doctors explain how rats were sensitised to chicken eggs and the protein factors that seemed to attract and fix the lymphocytes were called MadCAM1, also known as adressin I believe.
It's possible to download the full text of the article here:

It would seem that finding a therapy to inhibit the prevalence and activity of MadCAM1 proteins would stop the lymphocytic infiltration into bowel tissues. I have noticed that Melatonin is mentioned as a good substance to affect and inhibit MadCAM1. It's a natural remedy that I will trial soon.

Hi Al,
It's interesting you say this because (not even knowing this) I started taking Melatonin 2 weeks before my D started. I was going through an extreme amount of stress at the time, and a friend told me that Melatonin was a natural sleep aide. I now wonder if this is why my lymphocyte count was very low when I was diagnosed. Could be.....
Thanks for the information.

I don't think that this mechanism is necessarily the cause of all lymphocyte led inflammation in the gut. The research in this paper only examines infiltration in the small bowel but I have this type and very high IgE and lots of food allergies. I tend to get a delayed allergic reaction to foods with cellular response in the small and large bowel. I had very high amount of lymphocytes in the duodenum and have been GF since Aug11 which has made a notable benefit but is not the whole solution. I'm considering going Dairy-Free too.
I had to search around to find a substance that could inhibit the problem protein MadCAM1. An interesting paper was written about Melatonin having a beneficial effect on MadCAM and other research shows Melatonin can be beneficial in IBD and conditions like Crohn's and UC. This is pretty technical stuff but shows that melatonin blocks gut inflammation; http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-230X/2/9
Paula, that is interesting what you say about taking Melatonin before the D symptoms started. Do you think that the Melatonin was in some way changing something in your gut and provoked the MC? Do you also say that it meant you had low lymphocytes? Was this a low level of circulating lymphocytes in a blood test or a low level on GI biopsy? I think that quite a high level of Melatonin is needed to be beneficial to the gut and I certainly wouldn't want to overload on it if may take my symptoms back and regress to the bad old days.
Guess I must experiment.
