You are right, Pilates is based on yoga. Many of the movements are the same but have different names. For example cobra is called swan in Pilates. I think I prefer Pilates because it is more dynamic. And the equipment adds another dimension of complexity. Pilates is very cerebral in terms of the concentration required.

You really haven't had a good yoga teacher.

Iyangar yoga uses all sorts of equipment to help where your body doesn't do it. He was the one who introduced straps, bricks, blankets, and a lot of other more complicated stuff.
Iyangar yoga is super dynamic. Many other schools of yoga have adopted the use of equipment because they saw, from Mr. Iyangar, that it helps, and because people were demanding it.

I actually have a one of the simpler Pilates machines at home. When I got it from QVC it was very inexpensive. I used it daily for a very long time. Now I prefer the pool and finishing with some yoga stretches in the jacuzzi so my muscles are warmed and jets relax them.
