Saliva Deficiency Can Lead To GERD
Hi All,
Here's an interesting article that suggests that inadequate saliva production, such as in Sjögren's syndrome, may a cause of GERD.

Reading between the lines, this implies that the restoration of normal saliva production may be necessary in order to resolve/prevent GERD.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Here are some suggestions, but you may need to see your doc, if the OTC treatments don't work.

http://www.medicinenet.com/sjogrens_syndrome/page4.htmThe dry mouth can be helped by drinking plenty of fluids, humidifying air, and good dental care to avoid dental decay. The glands can be stimulated to produce saliva by sucking on sugarless lemon drops or glycerin swabs. Additional treatments for the symptom of dry mouth are prescription medications that are saliva stimulants, such as pilocarpine (Salagen) and cevimeline (Evoxac). These medications should be avoided by people with certain heart diseases, asthma, or glaucoma. Artificial saliva preparations can ease many of the problems associated with dry mouth. Many of these types of agents are available as over-the-counter products, including toothpaste, gum, and mouthwash (Biotene). Numoisyn Liquid and lozenges are also available for the treatment of dry mouth. Vitamin E oil has been used with some success. Infections of the mouth and teeth should be addressed as early as possible in order to avoid more severe complications. Diligent dental care is very important. Moist, warm compresses can be massaged onto the parotid glands to help relieve swelling and pain.

So what's your doc's explanation for why you can't produce normal amounts of saliva? If it quacks like a duck . . .
Even if you don't have it, the prescription medications that are named in the article might help, if you can't get any relief by any other means.

Side effects usually affect only a small percentage of the people who take most drugs. Of course, that doesn't mean much, if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones.

No. I was referring to the match between your symptoms and Sjögren's syndrome.Lesley wrote:And BTW, did you call me a duck?
