digestive enzymes

Post by jmayk8 »

does anyone use digestive enzymes? I have been doing some research on leaky gut and everything says that they are beneficial as well as the l-glutamine. Some articles promote the use of probiotics after some healing of the leaky gut, not right away.
I may look into starting some digestive enzymes, if anyone uses them here, can you recommend a brand? I think I read that taking zinc was good also...
I am also planning on staying on the entocort while doing all of this..that should be okay, right?

Jenny,
I've been taking L-glutamine 750 by Jarrow since this all began. It was recommended by a pharmacologist who owns a health food store in NJ. He recommended that I take it on an empty stomach, so I take one early in the am before breakfast and one before I go to bed. I think Tex said recently that it could help once the inflammation has died down.

I also have been taking Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS, a probiotic by Jarrow. I take one each morning before breakfast. I take slippery elm too. Once a day. Not sure if any of this is helping, but hope they are.

I'm not sure about the enzymes. I was going to another acupuncturist last year who recommended them, but at the time I didn't think they were helping at all.

Jenny,

Your response to enzymes may be completely different, but I took one single enzyme capsule one morning just before breakfast, (this was back when I was still healing, but I was in remission), and it made me sick as a dog. Within a few hours, I was vomiting, which was repeated about every hour and a half to two hours, for the rest of the day, (of course, after the first couple of sessions, it was dry heaves, because my stomach was empty). It took about 4 days before I got up the nerve to try some solid food, again. I've never touched an enzyme supplement since then. As I said, though, YMMV.

I don't remember the brand, but the one I took was an expensive combination of enzymes that was supposed to allow anyone to digest just about everything but the kitchen sink. I think it tried to digest my stomach.

I have spend thousands of dollars over the past 3 years on various probiotics, supplements, and enzymes. Nothing helped. Diet seems to be the only thing that is helping me at the moment. I'm GF, DF, SF, and also eliminated eggs and legumes from my diet. I have a long way to go and my grocery bill has increased but that's nothing compared to the cost of supplements. I used Ortho Molecular Products which must be obtained through a doctor.

Tex,

I thought digestive enzymes would be my ultimate trigger to wellness, but was I shocked! I only took them for one day, and was so sick, no vomiting like you, but really sick to my stomach. So, I never touched them again. Maybe, one day, but not now.

Should we be taking L-glutamine for MC? I've been reading some good things about it, but am afraid to start something new.

Thanks.

Jenny,

I hope it works for you. I guess we are all different tummy-wise. I never thought my digestive system was so sensitive, but am learning to be extra careful.

Garina,

Thanks for the information on your experience with digestive enzymes. I was afraid that I was the only one who had a problem with them.

 That's a good question. I suspect that it may help in some cases. I'm not sure that it's a miracle-worker, but like so many things, it probably is more beneficial for some individuals than for others. I believe that it's probably generally safe to take, and the risk of it causing serious problems is very low for most of us. Of course, that's just a guess - I've never used it.

Hi Jenny,

I'm now off of Entocort but took digestive enzymes occasionally while on Entocort. I had no negative interactions. I only took them occasionally, i.e. when I ate too many potato chips for example. iI really can't say that they helped but again there were no negatives. No recommendation on brand. When I finish the bottle I have I probably won't buy any more. Brandy
