Rice Caution

Post by Polly »

Sheesh!

We can NEVER stop our food police activities, can we?

When I buy rice, it is usually the "Rice Select" brand - you probably know it - comes in a large (2 lb.) square clear plastic container with a wide lid. There are multiple varieties - one I particularly like is a blend of red, wild, white, and brown rice.

Anyway, my hubby grabbed a jar of "blend" in the store the other day. On the label, it says it is the "Rice Select" brand as usual and then says "Royal Blend, whole grain". In small print, it says "Texmati brown and red rice". Then, underneath in even smaller print, it says "with barley and rye". Can you believe it? It looks just like a jar full of all rice, even though it contains barley and rye berries. Luckily, I read the fine print before opening.

We must remain food detectives for life, it seems. Sigh.

Hugs,

Polly

Polly, I wish more companies were more up-front in their labeling. It's really nice to pick up a product that says in bold letters, "Gluten-free," or "Contains wheat." Then you're not guessing.

That's really sad that they feel obligated to hide allergy information in small print. Consumers shouldn't have to take a microscope into the store in order to read the worst details on the label. That pretty much defeats the purpose of the labeling laws.

They're obviously aware that those ingredients are undesirable, or they wouldn't be de-emphasized by the use of smaller print.

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Yup, my husband bought me "fancy" rice once from Harris Teeter that included wheat berries. Yuck!

More proof that gluten containting products are just cheap filler.

Thanks for the heads-up, Polly. It is so frustrating to have this happen.
