Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension USP

Post by jmayk8 »

These are little packets of powder that were given to me by my GI to take when my D was pretty bad... It's a med to lower cholesterol but, it is sometimes given to chrons and colitis pts to control D since it's some sort of resin that helps bind you up. While I am waiting for my MRT results I have been having a lot of D and the immodium doesn't really work so I remebered I had these packets of powder in my cabinet. The first day I took one, I have no more stomach noises, gas or bloating and I am having one perfect norman a day. It's unbelievable. In a way I feel normal again. My GI did tell me that this was not a cure to lower the inflammation and it wasn't like taking entocort or asacol, it was just going to make me not go so much. I really wish this was a true medicine to cure that, it is seriously amazing!
On that note, I am still waiting for my MRT results and hopefully will start feeling this way after taking this powder and with my new diet.

Hi Jenny,
Alot of times Questran, generic name, is give to a person experiencing diarrhea
after gall bladder surgery. There tends to be too much bile in the intestinal tract. The gallbladder stores bile, so when it is removed, there is less regulation on how much bile is produced.
This bile acid can actually seem like a soap enema in which leads to the diarrhea.
Some, but not all, have found that it has worked to control or slow the diarrhea.
If it's working until you get your MRT results back & get your diet fine tuned that is great.
Much Good Luck!

Hi Jenny,
I discovered Questran on my own, reading a book about IBS, before I knew I had CC. I'm four years post-op gallbladder surgery, and I knew I had a big problem with D, so I asked my GP to prescribe Questran for me. It was amazing! Almost normans, if I take it every day. I still had some D, and had a colonoscopy last May that finally diagnosed the CC, but I preferred to continue Questran instead of trying Entocort because I have no RX insurance and Questran is way cheaper. It's actually an anti-cholesterol drug...so I guess it can't hurt!

Yes, that's the other thing-the price! I got 30 packets for $15 whereas I pay $180 for my lialda.

I'm glad it's working for you! I took it while tapering off prednisone and I'm not sure if it helped at all. Once down to 5-10mg of prednisone my D came back with a vengance so I stopped taking it. Happy to hear you have some relief.

Jenny
questran was prescribed for me by my GI when i was first Dx with Mc.

based on some discussions on the forum, and how it worked for me, i did like that it just slows motility, it doesnt bring it to a grinding stop. I used small doses of the Questran when i did the 36 hour transit to France,

something to be mindful of when having questran, if you are having any other type of medications, you cant have the questran 4 hours after or 6 hours before ingesting other medications as it will affect absorption of those meds
at the time when i was first Dx, and the medications i was on, i could only have the questran at midnight or midday.

Also - brush your teeth after having it, it can be quite eroding.

and as per my tag line, there is not right way or wrong way, there is your way. if it works for you and is affordable why not.
in saying that, be mindful that questran will not help with things like inflammation, leaky gut, villi damage that is causing the D. in my case by figuring out my eating plan and sticking with the eating plan, i was off questran within ?4 months post Dx, and only used it in times of contamination.

take care

It's nice to find something (especially when it's cheap) that gives temporary relief.

We'll be interested in your MRT results and the progress you make afterward.
