Yesterday, I Violated The Rules, So Today I'm :headscratch:

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Yesterday, I violated the rules of trying only one new food at a time, so today I'm trying to figure out why I had D yesterday afternoon, and last night. Actually, none of these foods were "new", but they were "new" batches of a food that I had been eating for some time.

Naturally, everything I ate was "GF", but obviously, something wasn't. :sigh:

The store was out of my favorite Mexican brand of white corn tortillas, the last time I bought some, so I bought another, (Mexican), brand. I tried some for the first time, yesterday. I also opened a fresh box of Chex Honey Nut cereal. It's also possible that I might have overdone the salsa picante, but I use a Mexican brand, (Tapatío), because it doesn't contain any tomatoes, tomatillos, or cilantro. I react to American brands - I suspect because they all contain those ingredients. I kinda doubt that it was the Tapatío, but who knows?

I prefer Mexican tortillas, because I figure the corn is less likely to be cross-contaminated with wheat. For all I know, though, this brand may be made in a facility that uses the same production line that they use for flour tortillas.

GF cereals are always suspect, due to cross-contamination risks, and we've had discussions before about symptoms after eating Chex cereals, (and the celiac boards also have a lot of posts about that issue with these and similar cereals). I've been eating that brand of cereal for at least several months, without noticeable symptoms, but maybe they are the reason why my recent EnteroLab test for gluten was highly positive. Maybe this last box was just the final straw, in that it finally pushed me over the edge to a reaction that was already eminent, due to prior regular "doses".

I'm inclined to order an ELISA test kit to check out that particular box of cereal, (and the tortillas, also). The tortillas, for example, seemed to be too smoothly-textured to be pure corn tortillas. I noticed that as soon as I opened the package. Maybe that facility doesn't even do a cleanout when they change types - maybe they just switch from masa to flour dough, and when the product coming off the production line looks "right" they start packaging them again.

Anyone ever try any of those test kits? As far as I know, they are accurate and reliable, (when properly done).

Tex

P. S. In case anyone is wondering - yep, I'm OK today. I did notice that my BP was down this morning, (which doesn't surprise me, because I was thirsty all afternoon and all night, despite drinking plenty of water, so obviously I was dehydrated. Yesterday morning, my BP was 123/68, and at bedtime last night, (after drinking a lot of water), it was 134/81. This morning, it was 100/69, clear evidence of dehydration. Note that without a colon, I tend to get dehydrated much faster than normal, because I can't recycle water, but during a flare, almost anyone with MC has this problem.

Really sorry to hear you had a reaction.

It is very aggrevating when "they" change or discontinue things that you depend on. It has happened to me several times. Like you, I wouldn't be surprised if the cereal didn't cause the results for your Enterolab tests. Breakfast does seem to be the toughest meal unless you are willing to eat things not normally associated with breakfast and especially if eggs are out for the person. I feel very fortunate to be able to eat eggs and dairy since I've never been a big cereal fan.

Take care, Shirley

Morning Tex,

So sorry to hear about the problem but IMHO I would venture a guess at the tortillas. If they looked and seemed smoother, who knows. It is such a pain, as Shirley said, when you have to substitute for something you always buy. Glad to hear you are doing better.

Love, Maggie

I seem to react to Honey Nut Chex far more than Cinnamon or Rice Chex, so I steer clear of it. I figured it was the corn, moreso than the mere fact it's Chex. Maybe they use contaminated corn to make it? On the other hand, I often read about Mexican brands of food being recalled for failing to disclose all the ingredients on the label, so maybe they tinkered with the tortillas?

I believe I'm going to go ahead and order a few test kits, to see what I can find.

Thanks,
Tex

Shirley,
I wish I could eat eggs and dairy. I hate having to eat

for breakfast.

Tex. Sorry you reacted. Let us know about the tests.

I know you do, Lesley, and I wish you could. I put off getting the Enterolab tests for a long time because I didn't want to hear that I was sensitive to dairy or eggs. I was so very happy when it turned out to be just gluten and soy. I feel very fortunate.

Thanks Shirley!
I am both waiting for and dreading the MRT results. The dietician (Meg) said she hoped that the MRT would leave me some foods to eat since so much is out after enterolab. I hope so too!
