dosage?

Post by Leah »

Cory. I don't know what dosage your entocort is, but 100 - 3 mg. pills only cost me $20 with my insurance. I am taking three a day. Is that dosage about right for starting out? Is anyone out there on less with success?
Thanks again for the diet info. My husband also just brought me home some books from the library on the subject :)

Wow! You have exceptional insurance. Have you ever looked up the actual cost of Entocort? It will knock your socks off.

Yes, 9 mg per day is the normal starting dose. Some people taper to 6 mg per day after 6 months or so, but most GI docs want them to phase it out sooner than that. Many members here use Entocort for about a year, and then taper down to 3 mg per day, or every other day, as a maintenance dose.

price

Post by Leah »

Hi Tex. No I didn't realize that it was expensive until Cory mentioned the on-line price. I have Kaiser Insurance ( it may only be in Ca.) and the highest I can pay per month for any drug is $35. Believe me when I say, I pay big time to have this insurance since it's not through employment!
Thanks for the info.... Since you seem to be the go-to guy for diet info, what about alcohol? I'm not a huge drinker, but every once in a while, I'd like one. It seems like if I stick to Vodka, I'm OK. I had to give up my beloved wine because it was causing me so much pain ( we live near the Napa/Sonoma Valleys). Wine tasting was a fun thing my husband and I liked to do. :(

Leah,

Outside of any drug interaction possibilities, most forms of distilled spirits shouldn't cause problems for someone with MC, except for those who have mast cell issues. That includes vodka, rum, whiskey, burbon, gin, champagne, etc. Avoid certain blended drinks that contain malted ingredients, such as wine coolers, for example, because anything that contains malt in any form, contains gluten. Beer is off limits, of course, because it contains malt. There are quite a few brands of so-called gluten-free beers, (most of which are actually low gluten), that are enjoyed by some people who are gluten-sensitive. Anheuser-Busch even makes one, called Redbridge.

Quite a few members here have problems with wine, (even though it is normally gluten-free). The problem seems to be sulfites in the wine, which occur naturally during the fermentation process. Of course, sulfites are sometimes added to wines, (and many other foods), as a preservative, and those are even more problematic for someone sensitive to sulfites. Some people can tolerate low-sulfite wines, if they can't tolerate wines with higher sulfite content.

Actually, nearly everyone here is a diet expert, after spending enough time reading and exchanging information.

I take one entocort a day, started last June. The original prescription was for 3x a day but that caused severe constipation and I cut back immediately to 1x a day. I have experienced no side effects. My GI recently put me on 2 Caltrate D a day to prevent bone loss from the prednisone. I've been GF, DF, SF since the beginning but still have occasions of severe gas, multiple BM's in the a.m. I think that has been a problem due to the stress of my husband's illness and death. I should probably give up wine, too.
