Vitamin D
Well, I live in CA and the sun has been shining non stop. I take 5000 units of Vit D daily. My latest vit D value was 40. Tex, didn't you say it should be more?
I like to see my level a bit higher, but that's just me. 40 is a good, healthy level. Anything over 30 will prevent most major risks associated with low vitamin D levels.

I think some doctors discourage levels over 50, but the safe upper limit is 100, and anything under 30 is insufficient. Under 20 is officially considered to be deficient.

Therapeutic uses of vitamin D, (megadoses), when 25(OH)D levels are pushed above 100, (up to as much as 150), for an extended period of time, are sometimes used to fight cancer, or major infections, in order to get a maximum boost out of the immune system. Some people use levels in the 80 to 100 range as a preventative measure against cancer and disease, (IOW, to prevent it, not to fight it).
Here's Dr. Cannell's recommendation for fighting a life-threatening virus, (such as the H1N1 bird flu), for example:

That's almost 1,000 IU per pound of body weight, per day, for a week, to make it easy to remember.Stock your home's pharmacy with several fresh bottles of 50,000 IU capsules of Vitamin D3 (a medicine at this dosage, not a supplement) and if you get this flu, take 2,000 IU per kg of body weight per day for a week. As I weigh 220 pounds, I would take 200,000 IU per day for seven days if I thought I had an infection with a 1918-like influenza virus.

Well, I think it helps. No one has done any corresponding research on the connection between vitamin D and MC, but we know that Crohn's and UC are associated with low levels of vitamin D.

Lesley,
That depends on how long you have been taking 5,000 IU daily. If it was less than a couple of moths before your last test, your level may still be going up. If it was at least 3 months or more, then adding another thousand IU should be a safe adjustment.

Hi Lesley, I'm from California also. What part do you live in? It's been beautiful this Winter ( right now in SF it's about 70 degrees) but I know we need some rain.
