MRT testing

I'm going to get my blood drawn next week for the MRT test, and wondered what supplements/meds I should stop before, and for how long.

I understand it's best to stop anti-inflammatory supplements like fish oil, and, I think, Claritin, but is there anything else I need to do?

Keep in mind that anti inflammatories include entocort, prednisone, aspirin, ibuprophen (Motrin Advil etc), Aleve and probably a couple of other ones. I believe Mary Beth can also lend some expertise to this

I recommend stopping all non-essential vitamins and supplements for the early phases. Supplements can be added back in later phases as needed. Your dietitian will guide you on this. Claritin will have no effect on the test, so take it if you need it. Strong anti-inflammatory drugs do affect the test, but you are to contonue taking all medications ordered by your doctor. The results give you a snapshot of what your body is doing while on the drugs.

You're right, there are lots of inflammatories I hadn't thought of. I also called Signet about several questions I had, so thanks for all the help and phone number.

I thought I had to stop Claritin...glad to hear I won't need to. I do take lots of supplements, so I'll stop those that are not too essential. I just wanted to be sure to do this right, so the test will be more accurate. I will post the results when I get them.

Claritin or other antihistamines hves no impact on the release of histamine from mast cells (histamine in the main mediator in mast cells). Antihistamines worksby blocking the effects of histamine after it is released. Additionally, mast cells are not found in blood and since MRT is a blood test, histamine (for the most part) will not be captured in this response. Basophils have a similar action to mast cells and are found in the blood. The newer version of the test supposedly captures some basophil response, but still no need to worry about Claritin use.
