digestive enzymes

Post by Belle »

Another questions- has anyone found that taking digestive enzymes before meals has helped them digest their food better without pain? Also did you ever hear of DR. Dalman? i think that is his name. I found him on line and he has this whole protocal that he promotes to help people with chron's and colitis. has anyone had any experience with him? he sells, probiotics, digestive enzymes, something with L-glutamate and something else that is supposed to help the immune response. Of course this all costs a lot of money too. Just wondering

I had gallbladder surgery in 2006 and have discovered that with no gallbladder and CC, it helps to take digestive enzymes. I found some at my local grocery store for just $6 and I use them interchangably with Questran, taken before dinner. Between both of those, and probiotics taken each morning, I've achieved a semblance, for now, of normal. You don't necessarily have to use Dr. Dalman's expensive protocol.

enzymes

Post by Leah »

Hi Belle
I have been taking enzymes before meals for a couple years now ( even before my diagnosis of CC). I find it to be very helpful- especially with larger/more complicated meals. I also just got them at a local health food store, but I do go for the ones that have many different enzymes because some are for breaking down protein, others for carbs and fats.
I haven't heard of that doctor, but will look him up.

Belle,

FYI, we have at least one member who was Dr. Dahlman's patient, (she actually went to his office), and after giving it her best shot, eventually she found that he was no help at all - just more money down a rat hole.

Some people find enzyme supplements to be helpful, and some don't. I tried one, and it made me sick as a dog for days. After that experience, I wouldn't touch one with a 10-foot pole. YMMV, of course.

Hi Belle,

I'm kind of with Tex on this one. When I was in flare probiotics caused extreme gurgling. I think probiotics and enzymes are a mixed bag. Probably helpful for some and not helpful for others. Brandy

As has been said already, I think it depends on the person. I am not in a flare. I stopped taking Nexium cold turkey. I have found digestive enzymes help a lot. Immediately after stopping Nexium (you are supposed to taper off PPI's which I didn't know) I had much gas, bloating, nausea and (of course) heartburn.

I use Rhizinate for the heartburn and take (sometimes forget) digestive enzymes whenever I eat. I skipped it all one day and ended up being very sorry. I am eating mostly Paleo although not entirely. I have improved a lot and I do think the enzymes help a lot. I got them at a local family owned pharmacy. I have also started taking probiotics. I can't tell if they help or not.

I know our problems are not the same so I couldn't say what the answer is for you.
