Big mistake.

Post by Lesley »

I got the MRT results and met with Meg. On my list for phase one there are some foods not allowed by enterolab (specifically) and a few new foods. Meg instructed me to leave out the enterolab ones, and to substitute some of the same value from further on.
Yesterday I ate 4 of the new things - peanuts, grapes, pork and quinoa. Very, very stupid, but since there are only about 12 foods I can eat there was nothing much I could eat otherwise.

This morning I am feeling horrible. I can feel something is really doing a number on me. No D of course, but dizziness (to the point of a fall, making a LOT of mess needing to be cleaned up), pain, cramps, bloating, the whole nine yards.

Step back. I can't do those foods right now. I will have to give it a day or 2 to settle down and then add in one at a time. Probably over more than a week. However, if I am going according to the MRT there is not much I can eat.
Thoughts?

Sorry about the rough start. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't be sensitive to foods such as peanuts and grapes. I don't have very many food sensitivities, but even I can't eat those foods without problems. I suppose anything is possible, though, since we are all different.

4 new foods at once seems like a pretty radical way to start, but I ain't no LEAP-qualified dietitian.

I sure hope your program goes better than this, when you start again.

I think so, but if I stick to the LEAP program I don't have much left. I don't want to try lentils, amarynth, pears and/or tomatoes till this is controlled. I am basically left with lamb, tilapia and spinach, all of which I know I can tolerate.

I also don't think that juicing the fruits will be good for me.

I hope Mary Beth chimes in sometime soon

Hi Lesley,
Yes I agree, testing three new food items at one at a time was too much for your system. Try them later one at a time. Grapes I can't do because I don't digest grape skins well. Quinoa I can eat but it looks like quinoa in the toilet bowl later. Peanuts, I usually eat only in peanut butter form although I have been successful to down a few nuts if I chew them profusely. Pork, I have not had trouble with. Your post makes me want to add lamb into my diet. It is something I had not thought of. I used to eat lamb frequently in Canada but not here in Texas. It's time to reintroduce it to my repertoire.
I hope your digestive system gives you some relief soon.

your body sounds like it is as super sensitive as mine. (which is not fun)

even now i cant do big changes with meal ingredients, meal times etc, it causes histamine reactions. I do 'baby' my body a bit, small changes once every couple of days.

if you have the safe ingredients, stick with them for a few days and let the body heal a bit, you have had a full on 12 months (?or more) of symptoms.

with my medication change there has been some rough weeks, at one stage for almost a week, i ate gooey rice, sweet pot and chicken, 3 times a day just to let the body heal a bit
i am at the stage that i dont crave different ingredients, i am much happier with a meal that settles well and minimises symptoms.

rest up and hope you feel better soon

Corey - lamb is delicious. When I am NOT doing MRT I make a paste with some fresh herbs (rosemary, mint, thyme) garlic, black pepper, grated lemon zest and rub it into the lamb. I leave it for a couple of hours to soak in, and then roast or grill as appropriate. Salt towards the end of cooking.

Gabes - your comfort foods are my "straight to the potty" ones. And yes, I seem to be just as sensitive as you.
I have been trying to find the meal that settles well and doesn't make me feel like hell, which is why, in desperation, I did the MRT test. They came back with a whole bunch of things that don't correspond to the enterolab ones. And their suggestions for phase one of the diet have a bunch of new stuff. Without that new stuff I don't have much to eat. I am trying to stick with it, but am trying to get hold of the dietician to suggest other foods that I can substitute because I really don't have anything I can eat other than tilapia, spinach and lamb.

So I am just as confused and feel just as lousy as I did before the MRT!

Thanks Gabes..

And Brandy - I didn't see your comment about dizziness. I haven't suffered from this a lot, but today was bad.

That's exactly how I felt until I took the diet into my own hands. I wasn't able to eat most of the recommended foods on the sample diet. I still can't two years later. The beginning diet began with fish, and it is a high-histamine food. I didn't realize at the time that I had a mast cell problem. Once I did, I had to eliminate all of those foods, also.

I ultimately listed the foods that were OK common to Enterolab, my experience, and MRT. Then I created my own rotation plan. I'm still eating the same rotation plan that I created two years ago, only with fewer acceptable foods.

MRT isn't a perfect test; it's a guide. I believe that Enterolab's four primary tests: gluten, soy, egg and casein are very reliable tests. I'm not sure about Enterolab's new tests that give a general recommendation. I suspect the reliability is similar to MRT's reliability. The LEAP program says that the red scores tend to be very reliable, yellow is also pretty reliable, but the green scores need to be tested individually.

I hope that you can come up with some menus that you can rotate. When you wrote that you were anxious for the test results so you could expand your diet, I winced. The opposite happened for me, and I was worried that it would be the case with you. I hope you can find some additional foods that are acceptable.
