Imodium ?

Post by jmayk8 »

Just curious, is imodium safe to take for long-time use?
My understanding is that it doesn't help with inflamation, just slows down the D?
Thanks,
Jenny

Yes, it's generally considered to be safe for long-term use.

Jenny,
Here's how Immodium (loperamide hcl) works as described by drugs.com. "Slows intestinal motility and affects water and electrolyte movement through the bowel. Inhibits peristaltic activity by a direct effect on circular and longitudinal muscles of the intestinal wall.

Prolongs the transit time of intestinal contents; reduces fecal volume, increases fecal viscosity and bulk density, and diminishes loss of fluid and electrolytes." So it doesn't reduce inflammation but it does slow down the action.

Like Tex said and their website indicates- it should be safe to regular use.

So,
I have been taking 1 imodium multi-symptom relief (helps with gas) every three days or so. And I have been having 1-2 normans a day. No stomach grumbles either. I have even had a few things on my MRT yellow list. (I know I shouldnt have but, I was away from home skiing this past weekend and It's just so hard packing food and going out to adhear 100% when I am away). I am still getting my 'heat rash' on my chest and back. Again, my usual is something working for me for about 2 weeks and then stopping so we will see how long this works for me. I have also been eating gf oats for breakfast a lot, I usually can't tolorate it but, now I am. I can't see how one imodium every 3-4 days is slowing down mobility that much? It's leading me even more to believe I have mast cell issues. All the foods on my yellow list were staples in my diet during the time of my test. Thus leading me to believe my body gets used to these foods then starts rejecting them. I don't know if this makes sense, i feel like i am rambling right now...Anyways, just wanted to keep an update

Jenny,

Your experiences are similar to mine. Imodium works pretty well for me. It eliminates the gas and brings Normans or close to Normans, depending on how much Imodium I take.

I also have found that it takes a couple of weeks, sometimes less, to react to a newly-introduced food. It is deceiving (and somewhat cruel, IMO) to eat a food and think that it is OK, only to realize within days that it's not. I believe that it takes a while for the immune system to recognize an "enemy" and build antibodies against it. Once it does, we are assaulted with the D.
