Fresh fruit?

Post by henrym »

I was wondering which fruits are considered safe to eat?

Banana's are no problem for me.

I am very cautious about adding new food to my diet.. today I tried kiwi's but sadly that didn't seem to go down that well

miss my fresh fruits..

Citrus fruits are probably the worst choice for most of us. Some of us can eat fruit such as pears and apples, if they are peeled and overcooked. Until our gut heals, bananas are typically the only raw fruit that some of us can eat, without getting into trouble, and not everyone can eat bananas.

Maybe someone else will have some better suggestions. And, of course, we're all different in exactly what we can tolerate, also.

Post by Leah »

How about canned fruit? I ate some canned peaches yesterday and felt fine. Tasted awfully good :)

Yes, a lot of those should work, (as long as you watch the ingredient list), because they're cooked.

Bananas are out for me since I am highly allergic. However, apples, pears and some canned fruit do work. Melons are the worse for me.

I am OK with bananas, peeled apples and pears (Asian pears are a yummy variety to mix things up), but I've also done well with non-tart tropical fruits like mangos and papayas (if you can't find fresh, you can buy in frozen chunks). Nectarines, peaches and cherries too, although I avoid imported ones this time of year...wait until summer. And don't forget avocados, which are great for you and well tolerated. You might try cooked ripe plantains too (peel turning yellow and black): cut a slit through the skin lengthwise and microwave; or cut into quarters with peel on and steam, then mash; or peel and bake; or peel, slice and pan fry.
I'm undecided on the canteloupe and honeydew melons.

Fruits I avoid when flaring:

Grapes, especially with the peel on (I can tolerate a few peeled grapes)
Citrus fruits (a little lemon or lime juice in food is usually OK)
Strawberries
Large helping of blueberries (too much skin I think)
Blackberries (too many seeds)
Kiwi
Pineapple
Plums
Watermelon (but I love it too much, so I cheat, and I see it on the other end  )

I am okay with eating bananas, and avocado (which is a fruit). I have eaten canned, fruit cocktail on occasion but considerate it a risk and I can't do the cans with pineapple in them.

If i am correct banana's stimulate the release of histamine from mast cells?

The last weeks I am having issues with itch at the hip area and very dry flaky skin on my face (the mustache area and forehead).
Also my face is a bit reddish..

I don't know if this is resulting from fruits, or something else..

Yes, bananas are usually on that list.

I have the same skin problems that you describe, in the winter months. Usually, I blame it on the dry air, because the problem seems to go away as spring weather arrives. It's certainly possible that mast cells could have something to do with it, though, especially the reddish face.

Henry the only fruit I can safely have has been bananas. I'm slowly getting to the point of tolerating others, but it has taken a while.
