Hives?? or Bug Bites??

Post by kitty16 »

Hi,

Does anyone have a way to tell the difference. I think they are bug bites as I was working in the yard yesterday. I have about 1/2 dozens scattered small red, itchy spots on both legs from the point where my shorts started (mid thigh) to ankles. (this is where I usually get bitten)

I would not even think anything of it except this new medicine I'm on says hives can be a very serious side effect.

Thank you
Hugs,
K

I'm guessing bug bites, since hives tend to happen on your trunk, not just your extremities, unless you are having a topical reaction to something like poison ivy. Is your medicine topical or ingested? Can you see or feel a tiny point in the center of these wheals that would suggest a bug bite?

Kitty,

If you were walking in grass taller than a couple of inches, those are probably chigger bites. If so, the chigger is still in there, causing the itching. You can cover the bump with clear nail polish and it will smother them and the itching will stop. (Actually, you can use any color nail polish, but if you use clear, no one will notice it.)

Hives usually move around to different areas. Bug bites stay in one spot!

Kitty,

It's possible that they could be found that far north in the summer, but not very likely. (The warm weather early this year could have given them a boost). They're more of a southern, temperate zone pest. If this occurred early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it could even be mosquito bites, but you probably would have noticed them unless you were distracted.

Hi Ya'all,

I am truly suffering from what I originally thought was mosquito bites but they are everywhere and itching and under my bra strap etc.! A girlfriend last night told me about the clear nail polish remedy last night and I thought she was crazy! I guess I'll have the boyfriend come over tonight and paint clear nail polish on the hard to reach places! :pulsinghearts:

I couldn't figure out how all of these mosquitoes got under my bra cups? So I'm thinking it's chiggers.

Kitty I've been using hydrocortisone creme and preparation H (recommended by pharmacist) but they are not responding to that. Also took Benedryl last night.

I'm in Florida Kitty so I can't help you in terms of the climate question. The funny thing the boyfriend took me on a hiking date on Sunday and Monday I could not belive the bug bites when I only saw one mosquito. I'm taking it in stride though.....it sure beats the laying around on couches that I was doing this time last year!
