Endoscopy and Gastric Emptying Study..

Post by CathyMe. »

Saw my GI today and discussed the metallic taste in my mouth, the bloat, and my feelings of fullness. She did okay me staying on the budesonide, as I am taking such a low dose the positives outweigh the negatives. Anyone had the emptying study done or endoscopy? I had such a hard time with the colonoscopy (she was not able to complete due to my "floppy colon") so I am quite nervous about the endoscopy.

Anyone take Zantac to help with GERD? She did say there are no real treatments for gastroparesis?

Cathy
are you taking Vit D3?

i was diagnosed with Hiatus hernia 12 months ago (his name is henry.... ) quite a few of us (not all unfortunately) have had some good results with taking high levels of Vit D3.

i also use a calcium carbonate powder (pure from a compounding chemist) and use things like coconut milk, coconut oil to increase my magnesium and potassium intake.

Hi Gabes,
I'm not taking extra Vit. D3. Does it help with GERD? I have tried the CC with little to no success. Fortunately for me, I guess, these symptoms are very new and it was time for my follow up with my GI.

Just as an aside, my PCP wanted me to cut my daily vitamin in half as my Vit. D levels were slightly elevated, in addition to B12 levels.

Hi Cathy,

Endoscopy was no big deal for me but they did it at same time as my colonoscopy. I was under general anesthesia. I couldn't tell they'd done an endoscopy. Brandy

By "elevated", do you mean over 100 ng/mL, or merely over 30 ng/mL?

Here's what Gabes is referring to:

Tex,
Good question, I'm not sure what the actual levels were but will check into it. Thanks for the link and thanks to you and Gabes for the recommendation. I'm going to try it. My GI said it's, "Very unusual for GERD to just show up". She also re-iterated the fact that i have a, "relatively mild form of LC" and that, "it should NOT be causing GERD"

I really think I need to get a second opinion. Has anyone gone to the Mayo clinic or a similar sort of place where they have several specialists available that actually talk with one another? I'm so frustrated at the lack of communication between my endo., my GI, and my PCP and the different messages that I get from each of them and how they don't agree with one another. For example, my sex hormones are screwed up and my endo. feels that it likely stems from my colitis shutting down my reproductive system. When I shared this with my GI, she actually laughed and said there is NO WAY my "mild form" of colitis caused my body to shut down my reproductive system. I feel like I have to remind each of them of all of my health issues every single time.....and would like to just have 4 or 5 specialists order everything that's needed @ the same time so I can get to the root of what's going on with me. My GI mentioned the potential of stomach cancer yesterday.... and then stated that the incidence of it is very low in Maine so she would be surprised if that's what is going on...WHAT??????

Thanks again Tex.

Unfortunately your GI specialist seems to be rather uninformed and confused. Research shows that the diagnostic markers of inflammatory bowel diseases (such as the lymphocyte count or collagen band thickness in the case of MC), have absolutely no correlation with the severity of clinical symptoms. IOW, there is no way that a doctor can legitimately make any claims about the severity of MC based on the patients diagnostic criteria.

Furthermore, since MC can (and often does) affect every organ in the body, it can certainly cause major issues with the functioning of the reproductive system. Apparently your doctor has never heard of the fertility and miscarriage problems caused by celiac disease. As you will see if you read my book (if I ever get it published, LOL), celiac disease and MC are so closely related as to be virtually indistinguishable, apart from arbitrarily-defined diagnostic criteria. IOW, a case can be made that they are the same disease.

And finally, I'm not aware of any studies that have shown any connection between MC and stomach cancer. Your doctor appears to have a propensity for making unfounded claims, otherwise known as talking BS.

I would so agree with your last sentence!! She has absolutely no bedside manner, no filter, and says things as she thinks them. I will be one of the first to get your book!

Hi Cathy,

I had some kind of weird relationship between female sex hormones and MC last summer. There definitely can be a tie out. Visited 5 docs of various specialties--no one could figure much out.

Also....what the heck is a "mild form" of colitis? If it is severe enough to be diagnosed by biopsy it is pretty darn severe in my book. Heck I would call even 2-3 incidences of WD per day pretty darn severe to me.

Cathy also saw your other comment on Entocort. I don't think I would be where I am now if I hadn't listened to this board re: long slow taper of Entocort. GI doc said do 3 months....I was really glad I did the 4.5 months as recommended by this board and DF GF. I don't think I'd be where I am now which is off of drugs and doing pretty good.

PS....I hate it when Doctors laugh at me. Been there....done that.....somehow it is kind of belittling or something when they flat out laugh at you.

Best wishes and good luck with your Ento taper. It sounds like you are doing well. Brandy.

Thanks Brandy. I'm not sure what a "mild form" is either. At my worst I was having 15-16 episodes of esplosive D a day, could not leave the house w/out fearing an accident, etc.....I definitely did not appreciate that comment. I'm glad you continue to do well Brandy. I'm going to get there!
