hibernation - and the power of VitD3

Post by Gabes-Apg »

just a note to let you know that i havent been hibernating during the australian winter....

G'day to all, :australianflag:

:welcome: to all the newbies, and

:happybirthday: to any birthdays i missed

I wont get to catch up on all the posts so i hope all are well,
and especially Tex, I hope you are surviving summer harvest, the forum and finalising the book!!

life has been busy,
medically, last week i was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosis we are confident that 6 week treatment with steroid will halt this. Long term i may have to consider an immune suppressant

life, work is busy, and it has been a cold winter here in Toowoomba.
on the weekend my dear friends (the ones that live in the train carriage house) were married in Sydney.
I was bridesmaid, best man, photographer, reader, etc etc it was a small intimate wedding with 5 guests (that included the minister and his wife).
in the lead up I was quite busy as i made my skirt for the wedding ( i could not find a MC friendly one in my price bracket)
The trip to Sydney went well with me taking my 7kgs of cooler bag with precooked frozen meals, we stayed in 'the manse' of the sandstone church with the minister and his wife, whom i had never met before and was a bit nervous about staying in their house. they were beautiful beautiful people, the wife was a doctor and drum roll, she figured out my diagnosis based on some brief discussions as she has an LC patient.......

the power of Vit D3
Despite me upping my Vit D3 to about 10000iu per day in the two weeks before the wedding to protect me against the winter germs that are here in Aus, Monday morning i awoke with cough, congestion in the lungs, sore throat that has been the flu this year over here (NB all the people that had the flu vaccination still got this ?virus)
it has affected about 30-40% of the people at work, some are onto their second lot of antibiotics for sinus/ear/bronchial infections. Some have had symptoms for over 4 weeks.

i continued with the Vit D3, about 15000 iu per day and gallons of water, i have been having about 4-5 litres of water a day. the increased amount of toilet stops is not an issue as i have needed to get up and cough, and have more water.
I have taken paracetamol with codeine for the joint aches and temperature, the only other things i am doing is Vit D3, zinc, water, small low inflammation meals and rest.

3.5 days in i am feeling alive again, the cough is still there but the mucus is clear. i am pretty sure the Vit D3 is helping me avoid infection. I have my chiro/kinesiology apt today that will help reduce the inflammation.
my chest, shoulders, back and stomach are very sore from all the coughing, and i am still quite tired. but i am going to continue with the big doses of the Vit D3 until the congestion is gone.

Good to hear from you Gabes! Sounds like you've been busy. Sorry to hear about the bug you're fighting and hope the D3 puts you back on track.

Hi Gabes,

I was wondering what was happening in your world, and I was pretty sure that something was keeping you mighty busy, to keep you away from the board for so long.

While you were away, your thoughtful care package arrived and I posted about it here

I hope you're feeling as good as new very soon -- it sounds as though you have that flu on the run.

Thanks again Gabes -- you're a diamond.

Sorry you've been crook, Gabes. You are always such a ray of sunshine. I am glad the bounce is coming back.

I wonder what was in the flu vaccine that made everyone sick? The only time I got flu since I started getting the vaccines was when I DIDN'T get one.

What is an MC friendly skirt as opposed to an unfriendly one? I would love to see a pic - especially with you in it! Sounds lovely.

the flu vaccine given here in Aus, was all the 'leftovers' from the past 2 years that were close to going out of date! it had no coverage for this current strain that seems to be affecting people worldwide.

an MC friendly skirt is one that a) allows for bloating b) is comfortable on my waist c) i could wear thicker liners and it not be noticeable d) stylish enough that i could wear flat shoes

as we had travelled for the wedding (2 hour drive then 1.5hr flight); we were having the 'wedding celebration' at a restaurant, and i wanted to have a glass of champagne to celebrate, being away from home with people i had not met before, feeling comfortable was very important!!

i just reviewed some of the photos and there isnt one of me in my outfit! (the benefits of being the photographer! )

Yikes Gabes, sorry to hear you are sick. Just curious, why isn't vitamin C part of your immune-boosting lineup? Ester-C would be easy to tolerate. With my family's bout of M. Pneumoniae, I took heaps of D3, C and zinc, and they seemed to do the trick. I took 1000 mg of C, 500mg twice a day, and it didn't seem to worsen the D.

I did oil pulling a few times, and ate plenty of raw honey from my parents' farm too. Mom can't get sick!! And I didn't.

I hope you get better soon.

P.S. I've been reading about this deadly strain of hand, foot and mouth disease affecting children in Asia. I hope it hasn't reached your shores. No one knows why some kids get only mild symptoms, while others end up in hospitals for months or die. Might be genetics, but no answers yet.

Top in or top out?

I have given up skirts. I wear wide pants in bright colors from the same store all the time. I buy them on sale (I always get them 70% off). I wear them with the cheapest, brightest T shirts I can find because I tend to feed my T shirts, and many go for cotton cleaning cloths, and I ALWAYS wear them out to try and hide my constantly bloated stomach.

You will have to take a photo of yourself next time you wear your outfit.

I love the name of your town. It sounds so...Australian!

top was definately OUT - long enough to cover the belly etc since giving up hormone implants the PCOS has taken over the waist line.

in the last 12 months i have stopped wearing skirts as i couldnt find any i liked or could afford. I wanted to make the effort for my dear friends wedding, and figured for the casual tone of the wedding, i could wear black if it was a skirt. I made the skirt out of velvet, so it shimmered a bit in the sun and did not look dreary black. inspired by 'project runway' i designed it myself, using calico and cheap fabric to finalise the pattern.

Toowoomba - unlike other aussie place names based on aboriginal wording ie Canberra, our nations capital where parliament is held is aboriginal for 'meeting pace' and then towns like wagga wagga, goonoo goonoo (pronounced 'gunner-goonoo') kurri kurri where the words cleary describe the landscape of that location - there is some vagueness as to the meaning of toowoomba whether it means 'swamp' the type of reeds that grew at the edge of the swamp or the melons that grew near the swamp .... bit sad actually.

after living here for 18 months in gabe speak i think toowoomba means means 'high windy city, yet beautiful'

Hi Gabes,
I hope you are over your cold or flu by now. It's funny hearing someone talk about the cold of winter while we are having a very hot summer.

Nice to hear from you, I was beginning to wonder if you were OK.

Your skirt sounds lovely. You and Connie are so great, doing so much yourselves. I am hopeless at it.
I used to try to sew, but my mom, who was a great seamstress, and could do anything with her hands, used to be hypercritical of my "finish" so I stopped.
I used to knit very well. Could make up my own patterns, but my hands are too bad now.

I'm so glad you're better.

Hmmm a hibernating bear in Australia...that would make you a drop bear

I do hope that the treatments you are working with can resolve the lichen sclerosis shortly.

I'm glad that you had a good trip with the wedding with your friends. I have become a believer in the higher doses of vitamin D and have been talking 10000 units a day for a good 6 months now. Overall I seem to struggle to get my blood levels into the therapeutic range.

Take care

Had to laugh at MC friendly clothing... Have been doing that for years. Tops long enough to cover that I was wearing diapers... tshirt long dresses worked too.

A couple of years ago I switched to hospital scrubs for pants.. wow nothing shows.. can wear diapers, panty liners or neither and love all those pockets. They come in all kinds of pretty colors! Once they became the only thing I wore during the day .. it hit me .. hey they would make great pjs if I bought the cute scrub tops on sale. I smoke outside.. wearing specifically purchased (adorable)scrub tops and bottoms to match them I can smoke outside at night and no one knows I am ready for bed. Can get the morning paper too.. that arrives anywhere between the street and the middle of the lawn.
