Yep, I'm the "chat chick" - gotta be the hostess with the mostess!
After the grey box comes up - wait a minute and it will say "welcome". You will see if others are chatting if their name is in the box to the right of the big grey one.

The Chatroom works by means of Java computer language. I don't believe that Java is available on WebTV--only on computers.
If it works, you will see Java load, and then you will get a welcome box with your name it it, and a long narrow window below that, to type your messge in. If you type into it, and hit "return", you should see your message appear in the main Chat window.
