Hi Ziz,

Thanks for sharing, a great read! I like her script that she uses when ordering in restaurants. PS. Her website is pretty interesting too--particularly her short video of her 20 years of doctors to get a diagnosis.

Her discussion of brain fog gives me hope too....she had times that she could not remember her address.....but now she is healed enough to memorize scripts.

I envy those who are just celiac. With my Colitis, most gluten-free recipes have to be adapted because I can't digest anything with roughage, fibers, seeds & many spices and so a recipe for squash with kale and tomatoes translates to just squash for me. My well-meaning friends bring me treats thinking I just have a problem with gluten. Most recently, a co-worker gifted me some gluten-free, power bars but they had sesame seeds which rendered them useless to me. I just say 'thank you' and keep on trucking. Another friend gave me a jar of homemade strawberry jam - a lovely gesture - and I quietly re-gifted this to a friend. Most gluten-free menus in restaurants have ingredients I can't eat: tomatoes, lettuce, chili powder, shredded cheese - indigestible to me. Oh, to be just gluten sensitive!

I found this interview very interesting too. I can relate to when she said she missed spontaneously eating out with friends.

My question is - Are people with Celiac really only intolerant to gluten? Or is it our medical field that believes it is only gluten, and the patients have never been tested for other food sensitivities? Just wondering....

I think reports have been published that suggest recalcitrant celiacs (i.e. when gluten free does not stop the symptom) probably have MC also.

Since Jennifer Esposito is avoiding so many foods in addition to gluten, maybe she has undiagnosed MC. Who knows.....

:iagree: with Ant. A heck of a lot of celiacs don't see a complete resolution of symptoms on a GF diet. If you look at some of the celiac discussion boards, you will see a lot of discussions about additional food sensitivities. I believe that Dr. Fine has also mentioned that his research indicates that many celiacs who are refractory to treatment (that is, unresponsive to a GF diet), also have undiagnosed MC, and I've seen research by other researchers that reached the same conclusion, although most research shows that the main problem that causes refractory celiac sprue appears to be a failure to totally avoid all traces of gluten in the diet.

Often doctors seem to have a one-track mind, and when they diagnose a disease such as celiac sprue, they stop looking for additional digestive diseases, so they fail to even consider MC, until the patient complains of continuing symptoms on a GF diet.

The point is, if those patients who don't see a complete resolution of symptoms on a GF diet, don't track down and eliminate the other foods that cause them to react, they will almost surely develop MC somewhere down the line, because there is no question that chronic intestinal inflammation causes MC (and other autoimmune diseases). As I point out in the book, celiac disease and MC generate the same laboratory markers in the intestines. The only significant difference that I can see is that for patients who have a celiac gene, villus atrophy eventually develops. Otherwise, the cellular histology changes (laboratory markers seen under a microscope) are virtually identical for the two diseases.

As I point out in the book, the definition of these two diseases is somewhat arbitrary, and a more accurate way to describe them (IMO) would be to classify both celiac disease and MC as symptoms of another disease, namely "gluten sensitivity". Aside from villus atrophy, it is virtually impossible for a pathologist to distinguish any histological differences between the two diseases when examining biopsy slides, because they both affect both the small intestine and the colon to at least some extent, in most patients. The book contains references to research articles that verify that as a fact.

Cory! You said it girl. I can't use almond flour, rice flour, corn flour, soy, gluten, dairy, eggs, except occasionally in some baked goods when they are used sparingly, and a myriad of other stuff.
Just Gluten? That would be paradise!

Jennifer Esposito has been written out of hit CBS police series “Blue Bloods” after drama between the actress and show bosses on the New York set, Page Six has exclusively learned. Sources tell us that Jennifer collapsed on the set in August, complaining that producers were “working her too hard.” Yesterday it spilled into a public war of words between CBS and the actress.
The actress, who plays Detective Jackie Curatola, took to Twitter yesterday to slam CBS, arguing that she suffers from celiac disease and CBS dropped her after she collapsed due to the condition.

She wrote, “CBS. . . PUT me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doc said u needed a reduced schedule due to celiac . . . CBS didn’t listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was NOT truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise!”
